When actions speak louder than words

Recommended Posts

I think that's unfair Bruce. At least five of the WG are on holiday this week but I'm sure we'll contact the Club and establish exactly the rationale behind this decision and then make a decision in terms of response.

Id be interested to know if this letter represents the default position for every Rangers fan arrested with regard to the Cup Final - & would appreciate any disclosure or explanation regarding this.

Hibs memberships put “on hold” following Scottish Cup pitch invasion

HIBS fans suspected of being involved in May’s Scottish Cup final pitch invasion have had their memberships put “on hold”.

Club safety officer Robert McGregor has written to an undisclosed number of fans requesting face-to-face interviews to discuss the unrest following Hibs’ 3-2 triumph over Rangers.

The move comes just days after police released more images of supporters they want to speak to in connection with violence at the end of the historic match.

Mr McGregor’s letter reads: “The purpose of this letter is to advise you that I am in possession of information which infers that you were on the pitch at Hampden Park at the end of the match.

“The club understands that supporters were overjoyed to win the Scottish Cup, however we also recognise that anyone leaving their seat and going on to the pitch is a serious matter, amounts to unacceptable conduct and places those on the pitch and others at risk.

“Any pitch incursion has the potential to result in more serious disorder and violent confrontations.

“The club is placed at risk of action by the football authorities by all such actions and urges all supporters to respect the rules around unacceptable conduct and to take personal responsibility for their own behaviour at matches.

“The purpose of this letter is to request that you make contact with me to arrange an appointment to discuss any involvement you may have had in the events that took place at full-time on May 21, 2016. In the meantime your membership has been placed ‘on hold’.”

A club spokesman refused to confirm how many letters had been sent out, describing them as “private” and saying only that they were a “communication with a specific group of supporters”.

It is not known what action the club could take following the face-to-face meetings.

A total of 38 people have so far been arrested in connection with the Cup final disorder, varying in age from 17 to 50.

Emergency services said 40 fans needed medical treatment after fighting broke out on the pitch – with one man suffering a punctured lung.

Hibs later issued an apology for the invasion, with chairman Rod Petrie insisting: “I condemn and the club condemns all of the violence and unacceptable conduct perpetrated on the pitch and elsewhere and in the margins of the match at Hampden. There is absolutely no place for it in the game of football.

“Hibernian will do all that it can to support the criminal investigations to ensure that those who have transgressed face the consequences of their actions.”

SFA bosses described the behaviour of some fans as “contemptible”.

Police inquiries into the incident are ongoing and an independent commission report is expected to be published later this week.

Club 1872 Comment on SC Final Bans

28 July, 2016

Club 1872 has received several enquiries from supporters regarding bans imposed by Rangers on fans charged with offences following the Scottish Cup Final. We contacted Rangers to seek clarification on why this action was taken, in some instances prior to an outcome to the cases.

Rangers informed us that it has always been their policy to introduce bans for those who are charged with serious offences occurring at matches involving the club. This policy is in line with the terms and conditions of season tickets issued to supporters and football authority and ground regulations.

It was also brought to our attention that both court bail and police bail following such charges routinely includes conditions which ban individuals from every ground in the UK until such time as their cases are heard. We do not have any details on the specific bail conditions in these cases but would expect them to largely follow suit. Rangers’ letter formalises their position on bans routinely imposed by the courts in these situations.

We have made it clear to Rangers that should any of the individuals involved be found not guilty then we would expect their bans to be reviewed and lifted and that we would assist such individuals in facilitating that review with Rangers in the event that they requested our assistance.

We hope this helps our members and the support in general to understand Rangers’ position on the matter and we thank them for their speedy response to our queries.

Nothing said about refunding money paid for this seasons ST purchases.

If they are refusing you a season ticket they will have to refund it. Rangers or any other club have no authority to fine you money which would be the case if they don't refund you. If you pay for a product you need to receive that product They may be able to take administration costs but that is all. Rangers cannot penalise anyone they can only refuse undesirable people entry.

It's a pragmatic, balanced response but I think it could have applied a bit more pressure to the club.

Again though, if we want Hibs and their fans punished, we have to be seen to be acting ourselves. We can't have it both ways.

The statement by Club1872 could have been written by the club itself. Instead of insisting that the club change its policy to one where you are innocent until convicted, which some have been advocating for many years and that in a democratic society is a right, we have Club1872 accepting this draconian position and somehow trying to defend David Martin's position of guilty until proven innocent IF the police have arrested you for something, (note not charged or convicted). As an ex-copper he clearly believes that they never make mistakes, and sometimes seems to forget that working for the club means working FOR the fans, not against them.

Club 1872 should be pushing with everything it has got to change this ridiculous policy at the club which goes all the way back to Herr Hood and David Murray who were hated for their treatment of fans, instead of acting as a mouthpiece for the club defending its undefendable position.

The club would have been absolutely spot on to say once the criminal investigations by the police have ended, if anyone is convicted of an offence, we will take action against them. Nobody wants those who have let the club down by fighting on the pitch to be given a free pass, but where there is a legal investigation ongoing, the Club is absolutely totally wrong to convict our fans prior to them having their case heard in court, and our fans reps should know it.

If you are on the field of play that would be enough to get you banned from Ibrox. Does not matter to the club if the police charge you with anything, does it? Anyone who runs on to pitch at Hamilton game will be banned no question, even if police are not involved.

I've got to disagree here Pete and think there is no "have to" about it. Somewhere in the terms and conditions there will be a rule stating you will lose your season ticket without recopense if you indulge in unsavoury conduct - not that I'm saying the bear in question did so though.

The question does arise however, when did the club learn the identity of the fan ? Before or after he paid for his new ticket ?
