I did not see Tiger Shaw play but my Grandfather was a huge fan. I saw Eric Caldow on a dozen or more occasions but I was a primary schoolboy and my only firm memories of him come from '66/67 season. He had recovered from his leg break but was struggling with his mid-thirties, recovery and, the challenge from Davie Provan. My old man loved Caldow. After Davie Provan, the club left back for the next decade was the bluff Fifer, Billy Mathieson. He played in the team that won the EWCW. Billy or Wullie if you prefer was stuffily solid. A Mathieson goal is real hens' teeth, I believe he notched one? Actually, there is a story that combines Billy and yesterday's topic, 'Rangers Keepers'. It was a game against East Fife at Ibrox in the early 70s and Rangers fielded a young Goalie for his first and last game. I cannot remember his name but he conceded and we lost 0-1. A middle aged guy in front of me blamed Mathieson for not stopping the cross ball and berated the left fullback, "you're tae blame, you're useless, you couldnae kick doors at Halloween". Did I mention Billy had received a ECWC winners medal earlier that year? John Greig played left back from '75 to '78. He bullied/intimidated young wingers and generally enjoyed playing keepie-up with Jinky. I prefer to remember ham and egg as a wonderful driving tough tackling midfielder. Ally Dawson was wonderful before the serious head injury, I thought he lost his edge after a long period of recovery. A real club servant, he Skippered the team that won the Glasgow Cup at Sellik park at the end of '86/87 season under Souness. I have huge admiration for Stuart Munro, he endured and survived a whole host of far more expensive Souness purchases. We signed him for a peppercorn fee from Alloa pre-Souness. He played in a back four of English and Scottish internationals, Woods, Stevens, Butcher and, Gough. He survived eight seasons and we sold him to Blackburn Rovers for £350,000. Munro's secret was his recovery pace, a failed tackle on the half way line concluded with another successful dig on the cusp of the penalty area. David Robertson had genuine pace, could tackle and, a real pile driver of a shot. Numan had the same attributes. Papac was more Stuart Munro. A special mention to Lee Wallace, stayed on after the implosion. I thought he was poorly treated after the 2016 Scottish Cup final and at the end of his Rangers career by the club. Barisic is a fine modern day wing back and a regular Croatian international. After all that, I am voting for Artur Numan.6 points

Does the sight of Gazza snapping on a marigold rubber glove stimulate a warm frisson of nostalgic excitement? Do tell.2 points

I feel sorry for anyone who didn’t see Eric Caldow play because he was in a class of his own and no one since has even come close. Don’t vote for imitations, vote for Caldow. 😉😂2 points

And as I said in the keeper thread: Surely it should be based on people's votes rather than mentions. If everyone mentions Ally Maxwell as being crap then he could potentially win it, even if nobody feels that he was anywhere near the best keeper.2 points

As it's the international break, I thought we could partake in a little exercise doing the rounds on social media. Every day for 11 days (11 days, 11 players) we'll pick the best all-time Rangers player for each position. The most voted player gets added to the lineup. Yesterday's winner: Goram Day 2: Left-back. Who is the best all-time Rangers Left-back? [LCF - Day 10] - [RCF - Day 11] [LW - Day 7] - [AM - Day 8] - [RW - Day 9] [DM - Day 6] [LB - Day 2] - [LCB - Day 3] - [RCB - Day 4] - [RB - Day 5] Goram1 point

Bobby Shearer would be vulnerable to pace but a big six footer brick outhouse would cause him no problem such was the applied strength of his twckling. Caldow on the other hand relied on his own speed over the ground and the speed of his interception and tackling. He would prosper anywhere, everywhere.1 point

We have tended to go through money faster than our ability to create it for a long time. Plugging the gap has long been the challenge. From bringing in investors, the infamous EBT's, to structured (financed by board members) losses. Short to medium term solutions that can create their own problems and never solve the problem. To be fair, the structured losses strategy post 2015 made sense and was financed by mainly very generous Bears.... But the problem was always going to be weaning ourselves off the need for extra cash. To bring in an effective and consistent player trading model is one thing but to do it when the club requires instant success is quite a different level of challenge. Especially when the potential cream tends to be taken before they are finished school. Looks a complicated financial panorama but at least we seem to have a real manager.1 point

Whilst I never saw him play, my Dad tells me Caldow was one of the best and I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting him as a YTS in a local builders yard where he would pop into now and again (he was a salesman for a supplier). I'd say Numan or Robertson were the best I've seen and as Frankie said, Stuart Munro deserves an honourable mention. But purely due to my Dad's influence and Calbow taking time to talk to Mr about Rangers whenever he visited the yard, he gets my vote.1 point

It will be going forward. GK is a simple vote, so I thought I'd tally up the mentions - even Sorensen's Daughter-in-law.1 point

The Goalie. Best in the world for a couple of years. I can't think of another Rangers player who we could claim that about during my time watching the Gers.1 point

The funeral cortege for the much-loved Mary ‘Tiny’ Gallacher will pass the front doors of Ibrox Stadium at approx 11:10-11:30am on Tuesday. 💙 Tiny, who served the club for over 50 years, was a treasured friend to generations of players and staff, receiving the John Greig Achievement Award in 2014 for her dedication to the club. Supporters are invited to pay their final respects.1 point
