The first Rangers Euro tie I remember was the first round of the European Cup in September 1964, Rangers versus Red Star Belgrade. it was a tie that really caught the imagination of a seven year old, 'Red Star' was such an exotic name. I accompanied my Grandfather and Old Man to the Main Stand, I still have the tickets, they were four shillings and sixpence each(22.5 pence). The attendance was 80,000 and we won 3-1, Ralph Brand notched a double and Jim Forrest getting the other. Red Star in their broad red and white stripes, black shorts and, red socks looked wonderful under the floodlights. A week later in the former Yugoslavia, the return game was played early-afternoon. Our Primary School Headmaster allowed a radio in the Assembly Hall, the Janitor wheeled in a large wooden box(transistors had not made it to Lanarkshire County education Department). It was only second half commentary and the immediate news was a half-time report, the game was tied 1-1, John Greig had opened the scoring. Smiling faces morphed into glum visogs as Red Star quickly ran in three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half. We were 4-1 down in the game, losing the tie 4-5 on aggregate. Ronnie McKinnon saved most of us from a belting, nodding in our second with six minutes left on the clock. The school bell rang soon after and Bothwell Primary emptied apart for a dozen diehards waiting on the final whistle. Our Headmaster, Bill Crichton was a self proclaimed Albion Rovers fan and he told us the aggregate score was five all and offered the teams would be decided by the toss of a coin. The next day Bill announced he was wrong, the tie would go to a play-off. Highbury, the home of arsenal was chosen and the game took place at the start of November. Again, it was second half commentary, we were 2-0 at half-time. Jim Forrest had secured a first half double, Ralph Brand adding a third clincher on the 75th minute. Red Star got a consolation with ten minutes remaining. I would happily take a similar 3-1 result tonight.4 points

not true the linesman called all 3 offside3 points

Got to be delighted with that. A very open game and could easily have been any score you like to be honest but I would suggest we were the better side and deserved the win. Thought the captain had one of his best games for the club. Plenty football left in this though!3 points

Another goal and an assist for Tav - his stats are phenomenal. Alfie bags his 32 EL goal and yet another defence rag-dolled by Alfie. Greegs saved his 11th pen out of 35 faced. All round brilliant team perfomance against a very good team. Can we label all comps we are in the EL given the performances we can dig out 🙂2 points

Totally agree with this. Very consistent. I thought Ryan Jack was great too, hard to believe how little he has played given how well he performs when he comes in.2 points

Another memorable European night for Rangers. I am absolutely cheesing. I'm not going to fuss over the errors, teams at this stage of the tournament will always cause errors but we held on.2 points

It's better than I feared but we'll need Joe Aribo to deliver more than in the last few games.2 points

Barasic was not the issue last game. But I certainly would start with Bassey at LB2 points

I’d probably prefer to have Lundstram in midfield in case we should need him to create a back 5, and move Aribo forward in place of Arfield. I like his energy but his decisions in the box and finishing have been poor.2 points

The lack of sound judgement from our board of directors is threatening to become Sturgeonesque. Even worse in this case is their complete lack of responsiveness to overwhelming supporter opinion that this game in Sydney should not take place.2 points

100% agree. There was something of the 2015/16 about him tonight. His swagger, his confidence in taking the man on. His runs were powerful and driven. He was every bit the captain. His career stats are beastly at Rangers, as are Morelos'. Tonight I'm just going to enjoy the result and the fact we have two very gifted player wearing our shirt. They will be very hard to replace when the time comes.1 point

Just back from the match. Loved tonight. Loved it. WATP.1 point

Aye, but would a Scottish linesman have called them as offside?1 point

An absolute brilliant result tonight. This was another good team that we have defeated and we have 1 foot in next round. Let no one take anything away from this result. VAR got all the decision correct, but if this was a game in SPL we would have lost 3-2 - let that sink in.... It will be tough next week but we have given ourselves a real good opportunity to progress.1 point

Crazy game. We rode our luck at times. They look good going forward but I feel we can score over there as their defence looked average. Like the fact that we mixed up the corners and set plays tonight. All in all the score is amazing but if some some players were more on it tonight, we could and should have destroyed them.1 point

Their #8 needs nipped and trolled. He's due a booking. This team have a goal in them, unless tonight is their unlucky night. You just knew Morelos would play a blinder tonight by the way he was bouncing on the spot at kickoff.1 point

A very strange game. I don't think we've played that great but we clearly carry a threat and the game could easily have been 3-3 at half-time. Credit to McGregor for making up for his mistake with a fantastic penalty save but the high line of the defence seems an unnecessary gamble at times. We've won the bet three times but the odds can't be in our favour for the 2nd period. On a positive note, Kent and Morelos are again having fine, fine games so I'd like to think another goal is in this for us. PS: Subs and their timing will prove important as match goes on.1 point

Slapstick defending - lucky to get away with nor conceding1 point

And you can see why Celtic don't want VAR... Sloppy from Greegs there but bailed out by VAR1 point

Yesterday another big McGregor gaffe, massive let off. Why on earth hasn’t he been dropped.1 point

Personally I think it would be no bad thing if the Pope was fücked. Give him to understand more fully what his cult has been doing to children in its care for centuries. Not sure it’s something to sing about though.1 point

Lundstram's form in Europe has been good, and he was on the bench at the weekend, which may point to him starting tonight.1 point

Given our recent league form, i fully expect us to pump Red Star.1 point

Crvena Zvezda are known for playing fairly defensive, counter-attacking football in Europe recently. I'm not expecting a high scoring affair. I'd be starting Lundstram and Jack.1 point
-
A decent lineup but the way we are struggling to retain possession at the moment, I'd prefer a more counter attacking selection: McLaughlin Tav - Goldson - Balogun - Bassey Jack - Lundstram Arfield - Kamara - Kent Morelos1 point

Not acceptable in domestic games either, most of our team probably don't even know what they are about.1 point

FARE will be in attendance this evening. I'm sure most know my stance on songs but it's important all Bears are made aware the usual FTP TBB stuff is off-limits at non-domestic games. Don't give them an excuse to close a stand or the stadium for future matches because we'll want to be there and the money is important to the club. I'm sure they'll be observing the Crvena Zvezda supporters just as much as us, given their ultra-nationalistic tendencies.1 point

Which is great as it's warping the minds of a certain fanbase who think they own the copyright to this 😀 Seems to bother them a lot more than it bothers us.1 point

I can't decide if I'm looking forward to this one or dreading it. Probably a bit of both. They're quite a stuffy side, who don't concede many goals and tend to play on the break - three things which don't really suit us. But we've beaten better European sides in the past few years. I'd take any kind of victory tomorrow night. Mon The Rangers! 🇬🇧1 point

We got a fair few pennies in during the January window and spent barely anything. Brought in 3 loans who have so far hardly featured. Also we have far too many key players approaching the last year of the contract and our best defender in years walking out the door for nothing at the end of the season. Meanwhile the infamous Skov Olson who went to Bruges for 6 million euro has been tearing it up there so far. Serious questions to be asked of our board, DOF and scouting team. This is going to be a very big summer.1 point
