I presume Souttar will replace Souttar. Its a shame for Souttar because Souttar has been good. But Souttar is better than Souttar so it would be good to get Souttar, and Souttar can be back-up to Souttar. Or, Souttar can play beside Souttar.6 points

You are specifically chosen by an elder (22 years old) who will see a vision in mystical blue smoke inside a Buckfast bottle. A manilla envelope will then be slid under your door by a young man wearing a black balaclava. Alternatively you can apply via their Facebook page.6 points

The William Poole thing is most complicated but the usual suspects in new, modern Scotland reduce it down to anti-catholicism. It is the 1840s on the north east coast of the USA. The great famine is happening in Ireland and on the northern west coast of Scotland but, other tragedies are occurring ie the pogroms in Eastern Europe and the beginning of the end of slavery in the south of the States. Tremendous mobility of labour concluded at the entry point to the USA, New York. Irish, Jews and, Blacks arrived in increasing numbers and lowered the price of labour. Those born and bred in New York attempted to ring fence jobs and opportunities. I am NOT agreeing with this or the methods chosen to effect the decision, I am explaining the facts. During the 1840s in New York, Tammany Hall was in full swing. William Poole and his ilk felt they had no recourse, they advocated protective collectives and fought those they perceived to be undermining their standard of lives. I suspect those responsible for Tuesday night's TIFO feel similar(I mean the decision makers) and, have decided to lionise Bill the Butcher. Martin Scorsese's film was an over romanticised version of Poole's life, as John Mc says, he perished at the hands of one of his adversaries. As a retired chap, the one aspect of Poole's life I find attractive is he was the founder of, 'the Know Nothing' political party. Shelby Foote does a pretty convincing critique on Poole's political activism being one of the enablers leading to the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. I find our current crop of professional politicians to be deeply unattractive, particularly here in Scotland. They have few if any principles other than narcism and maintaining their snout in the flowing trough. Nihilism can be just as attractive as nationalism but, just as wrong. The usual suspects clap their hands to gain attention then identify their preferred bad guys. The events of nearly 200 years past in another continent are revised to suit their agenda. I have posted on another thread that the TIFO was clever because it upset those that find William Poole's actual life to be inconvenient. Today is the anniversary of the St Bartholomew's Day massacre, modern day estimates say between 10,000-30,000 Huguenots were murdered in a single day in late 16th century France. Now, that is really inconvenient and maybe should be a consideration for the next TIFO?5 points

Of a fictional character. People are looking far too deep into it. It was a made up person in a film. The seethe over this is yet again OTT.4 points

Very reliable guy. Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you have to do is call.3 points

Exactly. It was an Ultra display, depicting a film character, at a football match. Next time it'll be Freddy Krueger, Pinhead or maybe even Jack Torrance - who gives a f*ck.3 points

William Poole (Bill The Butcher) was of course killed by his actual Irish immigrant adversary in real life and also his fictional one in the Gangs Of New York film. Daniel Day Lewis is of Anglo-Irish background, his grandfather was a Church of Ireland minister who had pretensions to aristocracy apparently. I didn't see the game so I've only seen pictures of the display. It's visually spectacular, there's a ton of work goes into creating something like that, it's really very impressive. I won't pretend to understand ultra culture, I'm too old now. For obvious reasons he wouldn't have been my first choice of character for the banner, but then I don't think it's aimed at me. I'm not sure why they have that Andy Capp type character either. Is that open razors on the banner? Many young men seem drawn top these type of characters, the popularity of Peeky Blinders is another example of the romanticising of violent thuggery society seems to enjoy. The 'nativi' thing the Milan fans use a slightly more political point, regarding 'natives' and immigrants. I'd be pretty uncomfortable if the Union Bears went down that road.3 points

I have it on good authority that UBs are aware their display upset Scottish Nationalists, Yahoos, The Daily Record etc. and are happy about it. Expect more of the same, thanks to threads like this. 😀3 points

RANGERS are today pleased to confirm the appointment of James Taylor as the club’s Chief Finance Officer from September 1. https://www.rangers.co.uk/Article/rangers-appoint-james-taylor-as-chief-finance-officer/3BcmlGFIMGAg19K8tLaP2p2 points

The character in the film was based on Poole but changed for the movie and the character was called bill cutter. A character created by an Italian American catholic and portrayed but an Irish Anglo actor. Its a bit like getting mad at the dinosaurs in jurassic park for eating humans. It was just a film.2 points

I don't think he's a fan, is he? I mean I'm sure he wants us to win currently, but I doubt he'd much interest in us prior to this.2 points

There's obviously been a lot of speculation about the alleged £1m compensation/cancellation fee that we have received for not buying Tillman. I was just listening to Davie Edgar on today's Daily Update and he described it differently, and I hadn't heard this take before. We indicated that we wanted to buy him and Bayern immediately activated the buy-back clause that they had built in so effectively we got the difference, which was around £1m. This makes sense and it probably a more realistic take on what happened. In addition, there is a sell-on fee so we would get a percentage of the €14m(?) fee that PSV have agreed with Bayern.2 points

Could have been, absolutely. Just found it interesting the Dutch journos have said nothing, the manager dismissed it and none of their players have complained. Compare that to the usual reaction to something similar domestically and it becomes headline news for a fortnight.2 points

Well, you cannae wear a jaiket wi’ a jerkin but apart from that, he’s impressive. On the subject of impressive, I assume the foreign journos were Dutch. Can you imagine oor boys from PQ and the Record doing that next week in Dutch? Me neither. In fact, if they could do it in English it would be a step up.2 points

That certainly wasn't the criteria for becoming a member of The Blue Order. All it took as a "firm handshake, being able to recite the complete poetry works of Edgar Allan Poe then a couple of X-Factor type auditions. From what I can remember I became a member of TBO after reading an advert either in one of the fanzines or on-line about the creation of a singing section. Applied and got a seat move to Broomie Front. IIRC The Union Bears were created as an off-shoot of TBO as they wanted to take the group in a different direction and moved to Copland Rear. A few years later both groups moved to BF1 (I stayed in BF4), the UBs basically took over. There are still a few of TBO guys sitting back in the original section in BF4 and TBO banner(s) make sporadic appearances.2 points

A group of fans have made a banner that uses more energy making a statement about being anti-Irish than being pro Rangers. It suggests they think about Celtic a lot. I prefer to simply bloody ignore them.2 points

The more I read and listen to about Rangers this season, it seems some fans are expecting us to play the perfect game of football every time we enter the pitch. A lot of fans have been quick to crucify Beale about his failings this season but I've not seen many lining up to give him praise for the way played last night and how we used our subs.2 points

During the first half of a Hibs v Aston Villa commentary, Liam McLeod has mentioned Rangers on seven separate occasions. The 2016 Scottish Cup final has had two mentions. Once because McGinn, Hanlon and, Stevenson all played in the game, the other because the final is Easter Road fokelore. Another two mentions for Rangers - Liverpool in last season's Champions League. Once to emphasise the apprehension SPFL Premiership sides have taking on English Premiership clubs. The other as a warning what English clubs can do, the word utilised was, "humiliation". Liam then mentioned two Villa players, he witnessed Diaby score against Rangers for Leverkusen; then he pipes up on seeing Bailey do similar. Finally, last night's Ibrox fixture against PSV was raised by Liam, "many thought Dessers was offside in the build up to Rangers second, the new quick VAR decision suggested only the player's arm was offside". Of course, Liam omitted the big Rangers against Villa story, the 1887 FA Cup semi-final which the Birmingham side won 3-1. Maybe Liam will squeeze it in during the second half?2 points

Harry Soutter would also qualify as nation trained for Europe I believe.1 point

Are they not getting away with it because of the length of most of these new contract, 7,8 or 9 years and this window in particular are selling a lot of home-grown players which will go down as total 100% profit.1 point

Richard Winton is a Dundee Utd fan, he's been a jobbing journo in Scotland for a while. He was deputy at the Herald I think, but then everyone gets that gig eventually.1 point

Son of the former SFA president David Taylor, so the rabid will be claiming more ammunition that the SFA are all pure Rainjurs an that. It doesnt actually say anywhere in the lengthy introduction piece that he or his family have ever supported Rangers, which leads me to think he doesnt/didnt. I dont mind that at all as it doesnt prevent him from doing a good job, as long as he is not a bheast because that most certainly would.1 point

I'd be interested to know whose place he would take if he is to come back.1 point

As much as the detail, the scale and visual impact of the display was undoubtedly impressive, I did wonder why they chose a character that was famous for making an anti-Irish sentiment in a film. Dare I suggest a display showing our great managers, players or victories would have been more inspiring and appropriate? There's a museum across the road showcasing this in great detail. Ultimately, it seems to me that a lot of energy and time has gone into trying to wind up the other lot rather than celebrating something that we've achieved. And we call them obsessed.1 point

A few contenders and most have been mentioned by others. I've gone with Dessers as he was key to both our goals but could easily have been Butland, Goldson, Souttar, Cantwell.....1 point

I doubt it: Sangare was their sitting midfielder; I'd expect our midfield to be zonally covering him, but they were all attracted to the ball. The dummy was superb, though.1 point

See Stewart’s shoes? Double buckled slip-ons. Obviously hasn’t learned to tie shoelaces and needs the added security of a second buckle in case he doesn’t do up the first one right.1 point

Despite being under the cosh for spells in the game I was disappointed with the draw. We had one or two excellent chances late in the game to get the victory. We were too narrow at times and our fullbacks were very isolated. It is no surprise that we played better after Lundstram and Matondo came on. The midfield were surprisingly poor. I thought Cifuentes was caught out early doors and was out of it but recovered well. Jack ad Raskin were poor. If Jack isn't fit he should not be playing at that level. Cantwell was really good but the ref did us a huge favour by not sending him off. We would have had no complaints if he had. It is great to have a keeper who cuts out the high ball. Our 2 central defenders played out their skin. More of the same next week hopefully.1 point

I don't know if you've seen the game back yet John. Regarding Dessers, the truth is somewhere in between what you heard on the radio and read in here. I think we are all very elated that we end the night still in contention. Dessers contribution to that with two assists, one being a world class, perfectly timed and weighted pass to Matondo, have glossed over some other issues that persisted. His movement off the ball could have been much better and should have anticipated better positions when players needed support playing out or indeed getting close to dangerous cross that he should have been on the end of, especially first half. Our defence worked hard, I mean our CBs. Tav and BB, aka Laurel and Hardy, were indeed very ineffectual on the night, but fully expected against the pacy PSV wide men. They are both really out of their depth against this level of competition. Overall, it was a good game plan executed well. We didn't have much possession, but we did well with what we had and I'd argue had the better chances than PSV. We were unlucky not to have won the game. Danilo sclaffed a late chance that just required a wee dink over the legs of their keeper and defender from one yard out. Matondo truly could be the player Kent was in his peak...and more. He's really been re-born this season.1 point

I think it's important to say that I don't actually have an idea why Halsted has become a director. What I am saying is it's very unlikely to be just for the kudos of sitting at the Rangers board table. Any major changes will require a shareholder resolution so he doesn't need a directorship to protect his interests. My only conclusion therefore is he has come on board for his expertise, which is raising investment capital, specifically in the American sector.1 point
