The issue most have with Dessers isn't just around his goalscoring. My biggest issue with Dessers is the rest of his game. He's really poor at holding the ball up, for a big, powerful man he seems easy to bully, he can't play with his back to goal and he's not fast so running the channels isn't an option. The biggest difference between him and Igamane is watching Igamane take the ball in when cleared from defence, he can hold it up, lay it off or create enough of a nuisance that he'll be fouled. The formation we play that's essential in our main forward. That's not something Dessers does well. Kris Boyd had similar deficiencies in his game, he guaranteed goals over a season, but only that.7 points

I'm sorry but no striker that misses a blatant open goal at 0-0 (not the first time he has done it either) and has 3 one on one chances with the keeper but somehow doesnt even get a shot away in 2 of them will get a MOTM vote from me, even if he does manage to score 3 of the dozen or so chances he had. I actually think that was one of his worst performances for us, and yet he got a hat-trick. Crazy game!6 points

Since Dessers lost his place in the side to Igamane we've started scoring more goals as a team, I don't think that's a coincidence. In October, with Dessers our starting 'no. 9' we scored 10 goals in 6 games, so 1.66 goals a game, in November we scored 9 in 5 games, so 1.8 goals a game. In December, with Igamane leading the line, we scored 18 goals in 8 games, so 2.25 goals per game and in January, excluding yesterday because of the quality of opposition, we've scored 13 goals in 5 games, so 2.6 goals per game. I don't think there's a which hunt for Dessers, I don't think he's being hounded, in fact I think he remains popular with the support, even with those of us who recognise his limitations. Igamane is young, inexperienced, barely speaks English and is adapting to a new culture, country and league. Yet surely everyone agrees Rangers look a better side with him in it?5 points

Think I said it previously but I wouldn't be surprised that if part of the deal to get Hagi back playing this season, was that he had far more control over his future going forward. Be that a reduced price release clause, or perhaps as it might seem now, a reduced contract term. Whatever the truth, I hope this independent football department review spends some time looking at how the Hagi situation was handled.5 points

The whole Dessers witch-hunt is truly cringeworthy. He is not Ronaldo, he is not Kane, he is not Messi. If the same measures had been put on McCoist, or Hateley ever other season, they would have been hounded out in no-time. We don't score enough goals because of our "centre-forward" (note the singular), but because hardly anyone bar him and the penalty-god scores enough goals per season.5 points

Nsiala played another cracking game, I was impressed with Curtis and Rice in the period they came on always making runs and getting involved in most of the action, let’s hope PC starts to put these youngsters on when we are winning games or even add one or two for the first half see how they do as there is no B team and it can be frustrating for any player never mind the young ones. I’d hate to see situations like Billie Gimour happen again going to some other team and flourishing like he did at Chelsea and doing now with Napoli.3 points

I couldn't help myself... Dessers' first 11 League games, compared to Igamane's last 11 league games. Both 'led the line' during those two periods. I think @JohnMc's point stands, re: team goals. Sure there are moments of madness when you scream at the TV when he missed the Sitter in which Ross was offside, As Scott Arfield said 25,000 fans love him and 25,000 fans don’t. I love him sparingly when he is calm and composed but also the fact if you actually look at the technical aspect of some of his goals he is looking for the perfect goal in which strikers like Dessers will f%&k up 80 % of great chances but those other times he’s there with the ball in the back of the net. He may not be a clinical first touch scorer but he is indeed a scorer who scored a lot of goals for us last season and continues to do so this season , I honestly think it’s a pity PC doesn’t have Igamane or Danilo playing in rotation with Dessers rather than the one up. Dessers work rate is top notch no denying he works his socks off looking for lost causes and sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t, I think Tav giving Dessers the Captaincy was a statement to just how hard he works for us , Also the way our finances are going and the way young Igamane is playing we need to indeed accept Dessers is better than Danilo in goal terms and who also isn’t as injury prone. So even though it is indeed Marmite I strongly urge we back him as the last thing we need is a striker who works his socks off to lose his confidence in fans not supporting him.3 points

That's what they might be monitoring. They'll most likely be back in the championship next season and may take Lawrence on a free in the summer.2 points

Yes and I think they both have two good feet; think Rice's two shots were one on his left and one on his right if I'm not mistaken.2 points

Rangers legend John Greig only wanted to play for Hearts June 28, 2024 8:54 am Greig, 81, was born and raised in Edinburgh, where he dreamt of playing at Tynecastle every week, for his beloved Hearts. Speaking in the final episode of BBC Scotland documentary series “Icons of Football” to be shown on Sunday Greig reveals he was snubbed by his idols as a youth and only signed for Rangers after being ordered to by his father. He said: “It was my ambition to play for Hearts. Hearts had a great side in those days and I was very very disappointed when so many players in my juvenile team were signed for Hearts and they didn’t come to me because they thought I was too small. “My brother Tam said to me one day ‘there’s a guy to see you, he’s from Rangers Football Club’ and I thought ‘well there’s no harm in speaking to the guy’. “My father was sitting in the chair reading his Sunday paper and Bob McAuley came in and started giving me the spiel about Rangers. “After about 20 minutes or so he brought a form out of his pocket and said ‘so just sign there son’, “I turned to my brother and I said ‘I’m not signing that because I’m a Hearts supporter, I don’t want to sign for Rangers’. “My father just moved the paper an inch away from his face and said ‘sign that paper’. I had to do as my father told me.” He added: “Bob McAuley went away out the door and I said to my brother ‘I’ll never forgive you for that, I’m a Hearts supporter’. “He said ‘I don’t think you’ll ever regret that, you’ve signed for a really good club. They’re playing at Easter Road next Saturday, we’ll go down and see what this team’s like’. “They beat Hibs 6-1 that day and I thought ‘what a team this is I’ve signed for’. And that was me, I never worried about Hearts again, it was Rangers for me after that.” Greig made a record 755 appearances for Rangers and later became manager. Now honorary life president at Ibrox, Greig is best remembered for winning 16 major honours in the club’s colours, including its only European trophy in 1972. But in the BBC Scotland programme, he reveals how just five years earlier he urged a referee to blow the final whistle as Rangers suffered their most humiliating ever defeat, at the hands of minnows Berwick Rangers. Greig was captain of the Rangers side that was knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the first round by the part-timers on 28 January 1967. The Glasgow giants went into the match at Shielfield Park in Berwick Upon Tweed as cup holders. They dominated the match but failed to score, and Sammy Reid’s historic goal for the hosts in the 32nd minute caused one of the biggest upsets in football. Greig recalls how, with time running out, he told referee Eddie Thomson to blow the whistle and end their misery. He said: “That was probably one of the worst days of my life. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net. “We were getting beaten one nothing and we’d missed chance after chance after chance and I said ‘Eddie, how long is there to go?’ “He said ‘it’s nearly time up, John’, so the next time I passed him I said “Eddie, blow the whistle and let us get away out of here, we’ll never score’. “So he just blew the whistle and we went off. That was probably the worst defeat of my career as a Rangers player.” Striker Willie Johnston, who was stretchered off in the 65th minute of the defeat, recalls in the programme: “I was in the hospital, I’d broken my ankle and I said to the nurse, ‘could you tell me the score please’. “She said ‘one-nil to Rangers’. I said ‘that’s alright then’, but she said ‘no, it’s Berwick Rangers’. And this boy jumped up and punched a hole in the window.” * Icons of Football: John Greig is on the BBC Scotland channel, Sunday, 102 points

How do you explain the crowd turning on Cerny a couple of months or so ago? Or on Tav? You're a bluenose, you know how it goes, the Ibrox crowd can turn on any player if they have a poor run, no matter what they might have done before that. You might not believe this, CammyF, but some of our support have it in for the manager and criticise him constantly, we're a hard audience to please, what can I tell you about the vagaries of our support... That said I didn't hear anyone booing Dessers yesterday. I did hear quite a few groans when he missed that chance in the first half. Anyway, home or away we score more with Igamane leading the line.2 points

They almost were. I always thought McCoist would come good. I’d happily have got shot of Hateley then he “won the league” last game of the season against Aberdeen and early in the next banged in two against celtic and never looked back. Dessers is an enigma. He scores from difficult opportunities. Easy chances he misses preposterously, the latest being yesterday. He can score from easy chances but only if he makes them difficult first by stumbling about before conjuring up a redeeming finish. @JohnMc put it rather well above and also in a different topic.2 points

So how do you explain Dessers being booed onto the pitch and booed yesterday when the teams were announced? Sadly, there is a significant amount of fans (at home games) who dislike Dessers and are very vocal about it. As for your assessment regarding whether we look a better team, that's subjective. We've looked a good team when playing at home most of the season, and looked horrific away from home. Whether Igamane or Dessers leads the line, that narrative is the same. They offer different styles and as someone else said earlier, it's maybe worth giving them a run playing together. Imagine having your top 2 scorers on the pitch at the same time......2 points

The fans did try to hound out McCoist and to a lesser extend Hateley. We all wanted a 20 goal a season striker and got one. Then some demanded a 20 goal a season striker, just not Dessers and started moving the "goal-posts" with silly statements about big games and scoring every OF game (something McCoist and Hateley failed to do). You'll, and / or he'll, never convince those who have written him off.2 points

Unfortunately I dont think so, Liverpool are just a bit far ahead. Top 4 for them would be almost as good as Leicester because there are 3 top teams around them in the table - and City are starting to come back. At the other end of the table Man Utd and Tottenham are in a total mess. Amorin coming out with strong comments which is either him regretting taking the job or saying to the board he needs 11 new players. Spurs - every manager they get ends up in tears.2 points

I'd love to see him doing more of what he did at his first goal yesterday, using his size and strength to get an acre of space to finish, but he rarely does this. I look forward to both him and Danilo leaving, and being replaced with younger, hungrier versions.1 point

Good to see a few more goals as the Broch tired and it's a solid, if unspectacular win for Rangers. Some decent individual contributions with Nsiala, Jefte and Dessers all showing up well. Enjoyed the efforts of all the fringe players who worked hard to show what they can do. A wee separate word for Finlay Curtis who was very good when he came on and took the kind of attacking responsibility on the ball that Bajrami needs to do a lot more of. Bailey Rice looked sharp as well for the final 30mins. Credit to Fraserburgh for working very hard.1 point

All of our players have a price, but I cannot see Big Phil allowing a firesale at the club when he is trying to bring a togetherness to the squad. He will want to have a realistic go at the title next season.1 point

There are fans saying that in call in shows plus pundits are questioning him. He is too stubborn wanted to prove himself right by not buying a striker. If Ancelotti walked into their squad and a striker I think they win the league.1 point
