I once heard Lanliq described in a high court as bottled on a Monday drunk on the Tuesday and an evidence exhibit on the Wednesday6 points

United raise their game against the bigger clubs - witness Anfield and Emirates recently. I expect them to do the same on Thursday.4 points

I attended the Manchester United - Rangers challenge match at Old Trafford in March 1974. We opened the scoring, I think John Greig swept the ball home? A half bottle of Lanliq has the effect of hallucinations on the seventeen year old mind and I mention this because I seem to remember big DJ and Derek Parlane both notched in the second half to see Rangers win 2-3. I will take the same result on Thursday evening. I am positive we can do it if Geigy, Dj and, the King of Ibrox park are fit enough to play.4 points

As said above this Manchester United aren’t the same team we faced before but then again neither is this Rangers team I think united will be to good in every department but we must not let this take our eye off the ball otherwise it could be a heavy defeat play to our best we can get a result play poorly like we all know do sometimes then we will get leathered .4 points

World class is a difficult term to quantify far less agree on. For me they have players that would be welcome at almost every other club in the world, that's what I mean by world class. Fernandes as you mention, but also Casemiro, Erikson and Martinez. Mainoo and de Ligt would get into most sides as well. In truth most of them aren't playing well just now, relatively speaking. I think even players like Maguire and Hojlund are significantly better than we face every week. As has been said the pressure will all be on Man Utd, so that's in our favour.3 points

Here, in deepest darkest Lanarkshire, Lanliq was correctly regarded as tonic wine with considerable medicinal properties. We travelled down to Manchester aboard the Strathclyde Uni Union self drive mini-bus. The case of Lanny on the charabanc had been placed there by a Pharmacist and all present had the necessary prescription. Old Trafford has changed on numerous occasion this last half century, it used to have a white picket line wooden fence that ran around the track. We stood in the Enclosure behind the picket next to the Stretford, many other Rangers supporters appeared most anxious to gain access to said terrace, probably to experience a better view of the game? It was most oft' referred to as, 'a bottle party'.3 points

Aye, this outbreak of confidence among our support gives me the fear. Man Utd are having a poor season by their standards, but they've still got a hell of a squad, some genuinely world class players and they've shown recently they can compete with the very best when they concentrate. I'd take a draw right now without any hesitation.3 points

Thought I would get this one going for the match on Thursday. First and foremost this is nothing like the Man Utd teams we have played in Europe in the past - they are a really poor with a system not suited to their players which the manager says he wont change. If we apply the same approach as we did against Celtic and Tottenham then it could be there for the taking.2 points

They believe (rightly or wrongly) that they can get in the region of £4M for Miller and are in no hurry to sell. In my opinion they'll get close to £4M for him.2 points

Did the Lanny fuel you with enough courage to join in with the others invading the pitch to challenge the opposing fans to well, shake hands?2 points

Hate to be pessimistic but I don't see anything other than a defeat realistically. We do tend to punch above our weight in Europe but I just don't see it. Diallo Hojlund etc will have too much for us2 points

Well let’s hope that Rangers start playing him and convince him he is wanted at Ibrox. We go on about investing in the future of young players what better example than young Curtis and Rice getting playing time and showing faith in our youth setup . I’d hate to see another BG scenario where he goes to another club or being told he isn’t good enough just like Lewis Ferguson was told many years ago.1 point

I hope not as raising their game in these scenarios seems to result in them taking a somewhat defensive approach and our recent performances away from home against defensive minded sides is not reassuring.1 point

Casemiro was a Rolls Royce world class midfielder at Real Madrid - I give you that but his legs have gone. Erikson at Spurs bordered World Class but again is almost finished. Martinez and De Ligt are good but not WC for me. I really like Mainoo but is still raw. Yet the key point is none of them can perform in this 3-4-3 the manager plays. You have a point about them being on a different stratosphere compared to what we play week in week out but not so much of what we faced in Europe.1 point
-
I dont think they have any world class players. Fernandes is their best but I wouldnt say he is world class. Diallo is on fire and Mainoo is alright but other than that they are poor. The defenders arent great and the keeper has a mistake in him every game. They will start as favourites but for us its the cliché of playing the game and not the occasion...play the team in front of us and not the name.1 point

They’ll only be turning that down because they will be confident they can get a better offer. They’ll have to sell this window or next. It shows the predicament we have the best young talent though when you have to spend so much for someone who won't necessarily improve your 11 today. It does look like he could be a future star though.1 point

Found some more stats on Fernandes On Fotmob. He has very good numbers for duels won, both in number and % won. Fbref didn’t have those stats specifically and it gives some reason for encouragement.1 point

Sky are reporting that too. Are Motherwell really in a position to knock back £2.5 million? Udinese are sitting mid table, unlikely to be relegated, unlikely to challenge for Europe, so an Italian Motherwell. He's out of contract in 18 months so Motherwell will be moving him on in this window or the next I suspect. I'd take him at Rangers, I don't know if we can afford the fee but he fits the profile of player we're signing.1 point

Champions League returns tonight and tomorrow. 2 games to go with masses to play for. Its very difficult to work out with a huge league table but it looks like there could be some big names in the knock out round, which is great to see - just hope there is no hot and cold balls when it comes to the draw. PSG v Man City is game of the week - both need to win. Looking at the table another good game is Feyenoord V Bayern Munich.1 point

Chelsea with first win in about 5 or 6 games to go 4th again. Id rather see them stay there than City.1 point

Neraysho Kasanwirjo is set to return to Feyenoord as they agreed with Rangers to terminate his loan due to the player being injured. Luka Ivanušec is now expected to join Dinamo in the coming days, as Feyenoord can now send him on loan since they've opened up a slot.#Ivanušec… https://t.co/xjHckew0fS pic.twitter.com/RKRLR4gTE9 — Croatian Football (@CroatiaFooty) January 20, 20251 point

Rangers legend John Greig only wanted to play for Hearts June 28, 2024 8:54 am Greig, 81, was born and raised in Edinburgh, where he dreamt of playing at Tynecastle every week, for his beloved Hearts. Speaking in the final episode of BBC Scotland documentary series “Icons of Football” to be shown on Sunday Greig reveals he was snubbed by his idols as a youth and only signed for Rangers after being ordered to by his father. He said: “It was my ambition to play for Hearts. Hearts had a great side in those days and I was very very disappointed when so many players in my juvenile team were signed for Hearts and they didn’t come to me because they thought I was too small. “My brother Tam said to me one day ‘there’s a guy to see you, he’s from Rangers Football Club’ and I thought ‘well there’s no harm in speaking to the guy’. “My father was sitting in the chair reading his Sunday paper and Bob McAuley came in and started giving me the spiel about Rangers. “After about 20 minutes or so he brought a form out of his pocket and said ‘so just sign there son’, “I turned to my brother and I said ‘I’m not signing that because I’m a Hearts supporter, I don’t want to sign for Rangers’. “My father just moved the paper an inch away from his face and said ‘sign that paper’. I had to do as my father told me.” He added: “Bob McAuley went away out the door and I said to my brother ‘I’ll never forgive you for that, I’m a Hearts supporter’. “He said ‘I don’t think you’ll ever regret that, you’ve signed for a really good club. They’re playing at Easter Road next Saturday, we’ll go down and see what this team’s like’. “They beat Hibs 6-1 that day and I thought ‘what a team this is I’ve signed for’. And that was me, I never worried about Hearts again, it was Rangers for me after that.” Greig made a record 755 appearances for Rangers and later became manager. Now honorary life president at Ibrox, Greig is best remembered for winning 16 major honours in the club’s colours, including its only European trophy in 1972. But in the BBC Scotland programme, he reveals how just five years earlier he urged a referee to blow the final whistle as Rangers suffered their most humiliating ever defeat, at the hands of minnows Berwick Rangers. Greig was captain of the Rangers side that was knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the first round by the part-timers on 28 January 1967. The Glasgow giants went into the match at Shielfield Park in Berwick Upon Tweed as cup holders. They dominated the match but failed to score, and Sammy Reid’s historic goal for the hosts in the 32nd minute caused one of the biggest upsets in football. Greig recalls how, with time running out, he told referee Eddie Thomson to blow the whistle and end their misery. He said: “That was probably one of the worst days of my life. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net. “We were getting beaten one nothing and we’d missed chance after chance after chance and I said ‘Eddie, how long is there to go?’ “He said ‘it’s nearly time up, John’, so the next time I passed him I said “Eddie, blow the whistle and let us get away out of here, we’ll never score’. “So he just blew the whistle and we went off. That was probably the worst defeat of my career as a Rangers player.” Striker Willie Johnston, who was stretchered off in the 65th minute of the defeat, recalls in the programme: “I was in the hospital, I’d broken my ankle and I said to the nurse, ‘could you tell me the score please’. “She said ‘one-nil to Rangers’. I said ‘that’s alright then’, but she said ‘no, it’s Berwick Rangers’. And this boy jumped up and punched a hole in the window.” * Icons of Football: John Greig is on the BBC Scotland channel, Sunday, 101 point

I couldn't help myself... Dessers' first 11 League games, compared to Igamane's last 11 league games. Both 'led the line' during those two periods. I think @JohnMc's point stands, re: team goals.
