  2. I'm trying my best not to get carried away, but as weeks in football go this has been a very enjoyable one and I aim to make the most if it. The last couple of years have been so bloody awful that professional away performances against half decent European sides should be greeted like long lost friends. A word for Murphy who does a power of work without the ball, tracking runners, closing space, harrying defenders and midfielders, much of it unseen. His final ball could improve but his overall contribution is under appreciated. Walk about today with big smiles on your faces Bears, enjoy these moments, we've earned them.

  3. We need another three players: a striker, a centre-half and a creative midfielder. We also need Rossiter fit for depth and the likes of Sadiq playing regularly. Playing Thursday/Sunday every week means we need to rotate players as much as we can. If not, niggling injuries will be picked up (See Coulibaly) and we'll soon lose momentum as players become tired.

  5. I agree. Better teams than Rangers have gone there over the last 2/3 years and didn't get better than a point. The best part about last night for me that was it continued our momentum. Momentum is key in football (especially with new teams) and the fact that the players were determined to get through the tie shows us a lot about what SG has managed to get through to the team this early. For example, you get the impression that the defenders would be gutted to give away a chance to the opposition never mind lose a goal. I like that attitude. I know it's early but it's giving me the same feeling I had back in the 86-87 season when Souness put his stamp on Rangers after 7/8 years of dross. That season we started slowly and surely (with a few initial hiccups) but the signs were good and we gained momentum thanks to our improving domestic form (2 OF wins including a League Cup win) and a confidence boosting unbeaten UEFA cup run (Boavista, Borussia Munchengladbach). After that there was no stopping us and the momentum carried us to the end of the season.

  6. Rangers travel to Ufa in the Republic of Bashkortostan to play the local side to get into the group stages of the Europa Cup. Scottish fans who missed out on visiting Russia during the World Cup can experience Russia first hand and enjoy the beautiful city of Ufa and it's warm hospitality. As a Scotsman who lives in Ufa I know that local fans will warmly welcome all Rangers fans.Don't believe the lying Western Media, there are no bears in the streets, the people are friendly and all football fans can enjoy a great time.

  9. Maribor would have destroyed us last year. It was a hard tie that was dealt with in a very professional manner. Keep in mind that in recent years, Chelsea, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla have all failed to win in Slovenia against them. They even managed a draw against Shalke away. Obviously they are not world beaters but they were a decent outfit none the less. Tremendous effort by the team and staff over the past few months. Very proud of the progress being made in such a short period of time.

  10. Over two legs against Maribor we did great. 3-1 against a team with that experience is excellent and then holding them in Slovenia...is ideal. I am delighted we're through and very impressed with how we performed. When I'm happy, you know things are going well. Chin up, Bears. The tide is turning.

  13. Personally speaking we are Rangers not Glasgow Rangers. Rangers is our official name and is quite unique in Scottish/English football tbh. Along with Arsenal, Celtic, St. Mirren and Albion Rovers we are one of the small bunch of teams in England and Scotland that don't have a geographical reference in our name. I kind of like that.

  17. I agree with you as a Rangers supporter Bill but the BBC will influence young kids who have parents who have no interest in football. I know quite a few kids that are crazy on football but have parents who are not. They have the BBC on there telly but no Rangers TV. That gives the other teams a big advantage.

  23. I would say calling Rangers 'Glasgow Rangers' is a bit like in golf calling the Open the 'British Open'.......there's the U.S. Open, The Scottish Open etc etc, and there's the 'Open'...............................there's Queens Park Rangers, Berwick Rangers, Stafford Rangers, New York Rangers, the Texas Rangers etc etc......then there's us, Rangers........super Rangers!

  25. What we did was get in the way of Maribor and find a way to get through the tie. SG will be very happy with that, it's all that mattered. Maribor aren't that great a side BUT their strong suit in Europe in recent years summer qualifiers was that they found a way to get through ties. We basically beat them at their own game and we did it with an almost new squad and significant players out injured/suspended.

  27. Our crests both say Rangers Football Club. Glasgow isn't mentioned. Also worth noting that last night we were without Coulibaly and Barisic, who are arguably two of our best players.

  30. @Ser Barristan Selmy - they didn't look great but you have to look at their record in Europe (especially at home) and they are clearly a decent European side. In the last 3/4 years Sevilla, Spartak Moscow, Chelsea, Sporting Lisbon, Maccabi Tel Aviv and another half dozen smaller teams have failed to win at their ground. Only Liverpool and Schalke have done that. I think Gerrard has built a very solid team that makes good attacking sides look ordinary. And I thought a good bit of the joy they did get wouldn't have happened with Coulibaly/Barisic/Flanagan on the park. We could be more clinical but Gerrard is in the process of adding to the team in that area.

  31. I think there are several teams in that bracket.

  32. If we get through we'd have our own seeding 3.725 (rather than Ufa's) but it's incidental as both go to pot 4.

  35. @Ser Barristan Selmy I watched the ufa game yesterday and can honestly say they looked extremely poor. The main concern is the distance we must travel. Hopefully we can put the tie to bed at Ibrox.

  36. If we get into the group stages , we will desperately need another 3 or 4 players , we cannot expect the same guys to play at this level week in week out , especially as we will be having 2 games most weeks .

  38. Sidenote - yellow cards: Up to the group phase, you get a one game suspension for your 3rd and then your fifth card. They will be removed after the play-off phase (i.e. next round). During the group phase, you receive a one match ban after 3, 5, 7 ,9 etc. yellow cards. Those cards will be removed after the quarter finals.

  40. True enough. I'd still not have hime before the defence and Jack, who was immense in DM. You actually wonder if someone with more composure would have sunk a few chances that came Morelos' way today. NB: Halliday was solid as left-back. Not great, but quite solid in these conditions.

  43. I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks the BBC is "irrelevant" clearly doesn't work in the media. The BBC is far from irrelevant, indeed I'd venture it has more influence and reach now than at anytime since the mid-1980s. I think much of this 'confusion' comes from falling ratings for BBC1 and indeed the main ITV channels and the changing way people view and interact with television in particular. There is no doubt that BBC television attracts fewer viewers than it did even 10 years ago, however that's far from the full story. Staying with television the BBC is still a formidable ratings puller. Programmes like Blue Planet and Strictly pulled in in excess of 13 million viewers last year. Nothing on Netflix, Amazon or You Tube comes close to that in the UK. The BBC news and sports programmes also rate highly with viewers. This year the highest rated TV programme in the UK was the England v Sweden match in Russia, an astonishing 20 million people watched it live. TV viewing is changing, however the BBC is far better prepared for this than some seem to think. The BBC iPlayer is an excellent 'on-demand' facility and is widely available and used. The BBC are also now releasing series on the iPlayer in one go, rather than one episode at a time. It's also worth pointing out that in Scotland we have only two stations catering for a specific local audience; BBC Scotland and STV (Border too although it is largely based in Carlisle and Cumbria). As such BBC Reporting Scotland out performs all other local and regional BBC TV news programmes, as does Scotland Today on STV. For 'local' news they are most certainly not 'irrelevant'. Viewing figures for the always dreadful 'Still Game' are staggering. The finale episode attracted 1.8 million viewers in Scotland, nearly 36% of the population. That's the kind of figures countries that only have one TV channel get! Looking at radio, an area the BBC still excels at, Scotland remains an outlier. 21% of the population of Scotland listen to Radio Scotland every week, on average listening to 6.9 hours a week. When you add in national BBC radio stations BBC radio has 45% of the market in Scotland. The other 55% is split between national commercial radio and local commercial radio stations. Radio Scot;and has the largest audience of any station broadcasting only in Scotland (so compared to Clyde, Westsound, Forth etc) and both BBC Radio 1 and 2 are the biggest in terms of overall listenership in Scotland. Radio has been largely unaffected by the internet. Most people still listen on an AM/FM device, with growing use of DAB sets as they become more common in cars. BBC radio in Scotland is very influential, to pretend otherwise is folly. The real reason dismissing the BBC as irrelevant or a dinosaur is a mistake though is their website. The BBC website is a monstrous success. As of last month it is the 5th most used site in the UK and the most used website actually based in the UK (Google, Amazon, Facebook and You Tube are more visited). It is the go-to website for news and sport in the UK. The BBC's ability to 'cross-platform' is largely unrivalled, the 'red-button', their phone apps, digital channels and their website are enormously valuable and influential. By October last year the BBC website was getting over 6 billion page views a month, up around 1 billion on 12 months before. The BBC has many, many faults, but understanding and adapting to the changes in media and media consumption isn't one of them. It is highly unlikely they will become 'irrelevant' in our lifetime. Their unique funding, market share and charter almost guarantees relevancy.
