  1. Someone was on the glue when they bought him and then on the skag last summer when they didn't sell him.

  2. Must get my name on the season ticket waiting list so I can demand to be taken off it if SG gets the job.

  3. Nope, they'd make him a joke figure, which really wouldn't be hard.

  7. We came out of 9IAR with no net debt and cash in the bank. It was only after 1997 that the spending went crazy.

  8. Here and in general. If you're not seeing any cheerleading then maybe you've become inured to it. I don't think there is any comparison between the current board and SDM. Whatever failures they have they own them. I don't have the same hatred for our board that some seem to harbour. Whatever their faults I'm more comfortable with them than whatever venture capitalists we've got coming next. I know, i'm an inveterate loser who is happy finishing second every season.

  9. Which years would any of you say are the "glory years", and which years would any of you say we were "properly run", and finally do the two line up?

  10. I agree, we do, but I would be very surprised if he was coming in as the first choice full back. He's young, Scottish for European criteria, free to sign and low wages, experience of the Scottish league, exactly the type of squad player we should be looking at when our 1st choice could/should (Delete as per your preference) be leaving this summer, and the backup spends more time in the medical department than the doctor.

  11. Id have Jose from the list and its a job that may suit him better these days being in a 2 horse race. Granted he isnt the same manager as 10 years ago but he would command respect and a winning mentality surely for 1-2 seasons to get the league title back. He's also going to be able to attract a better standard of player. Rafa Benitez 10 years ago would have got a vote but he's been away from the game too long. Gerrard's stock has fallen since he left after his two management spells and very rarely does going back have a good affect. It worked terrific with Walter Smith for us and looking to the Premier League it worked with David Moyes at West Ham and now Everton but I dont think those relationships with Manager and Club deteriorated at all, with Gerrard it was - thanks and good luck - and in came Gio who kicked us onto a Euro final.

  14. No, we needed someone who could eradicate the debt, that was Bain's priority and he was achieving that. FFS old Cammy is going mental at "now" Cammy for defending Bain 😀

  15. But prior to SDM selling the club to Whyte, he was actively tackling the debt. That's undeniable.

  16. I think it’s to do with the fact he is a “specialist” at taking teams up front the PL like he did with his last team Norwich twice I believe , yet when it comes to staying in the PL these days he just doesn’t cut the mustard, I’ve just heard Mourinhos been linked with Leeds job so that will be interesting .

  20. Fair points but how do you see the current board being able to stop the decline, start to progress and then become sustainable and successful? Didn't one of the board basically admit in a recent interview that without new investors, the club would stall / stagnate? I'd argue we have already stalled and stagnated. Other than fresh investment what else can happen to reverse the decline? I'm sure you aren't happy being 2nd best for the foreseeable future no matter who's in control?

  21. Up until around 1965. Anything after that can be accurately described as bad. Even when successful, after 1965, the un-Struthian nature of it all turns the stomach.

  22. Spot on. The only time we succeeded anywhere near within our means in my lifetime was around big McLeish's time, in terms of player budget.

  24. Jose is about as far on the complete opposite end of the spectrum of what we require, as you could go. We need a system, ie sporting director, coaches etc, that work towards development every bit as much as it does working towards success. Which definitely isn't Maureen.

  25. Havent really seen the lad Mulligan but our track record of taking players from Dundee isnt bad. John Brown, Nacho Novo, Claudio Caniggia, Glen Kamara....

  26. I think that will be right though I’d prefer Villa v Forest. I admit to a concern that Palace might already be engraved on the Trophy. I don’t want that to happen.

  28. If we don’t get Marco then I believe Jose would be no 2 and give us fans something to be proud of or the performance we expect and demand. I was watching some documentary last night about his Champions league wins on BBC and it honestly made me feel like he connects with the players sure there comes a cost but I also believe he will set up a youth system like he put in place at Porto where he based his ethos of having more “local” players in the team with a handful of foreigners. His words not mine 🤣He doesn’t care about trophies or cups he cares about how the club and the fans/players remembered how he made them feel as he managed the club. As he said in the Chelsea press conference he isn’t just a bottle from a box HE IS THE SPECIAL ONE. As long as the billionaires are paying for it.

  29. Something I seen said since 1912 they have only picked players from the Basque Country in both Spain and France or trained by the Basque ethos ,as they started the club after being surprised and interested with the football games British immigrants were having whilst at port of Bilbao. As their fans see it fosters a deep connection between the team, players and the local community something they can call their own people and I’m definitely behind that ethos all day long. yet because they use this Basque technique they have been heavily criticised as being discriminatory , I believe it has become Athletics identity and it’s something the Supporters are very proud of off as you seen if you watch some of their Home Games Passion and pride is present and READY to take part in each game. We already have a connection with the club there is no doubt about that but I strongly believe in the future and going forward we need some sort of System in place that represents our youth system and our clubs motto entwined in each player that comes through our Front doors! R esilient in spirit, We’re always ready through thick and thin. E ager for victory, let the triumphs begin. A lways prepared, as we are the people . D etermined and ready to win no matter what it costs. Y es! To the fight, let the fcking roar begin! Excuse the erratic writing i wake up early and I think my normal brain takes me on a rant before my medication starts to kick in 🤣

  30. Pretty sure you can be born in Timbuktu and play for them provided you went through a youth system in the region.

  31. I love everything that Athletic do as a club by only having players from that region and it’s like a family run unit everyone knows the identity of the club and it’s one common goal, Sure we can’t do that from the get go but we can at least cut costs on spending x y z on has beens and focus on our future stars like young Rice & Curtis in which I hope Barry plays them in his remaining games to give them a chance to show case their talents. It actually saddened me when I found out that Billie Gilmore hadn’t actually played a game for Rangers first team yet was snatched by Chelsea yet had been at the club through our youth setup. All we have to do is look at this as a prime example of what we didn’t do to acknowledge the talent he was as it’s clearly shown with his performances of late with Napoli. I have a small glimmer of hope the DNA of our club will be revived due to what is happening with Leeds , I genuinely hope and have some optimism the new investors are aware of what the club means to us fans and the DNA of our club is restored as a club is nothing without its fans and as of late we have been left in the darkness. Yes time will tell and hopefully in due course there opening statement will highlight the intentions they want to achieve.

  33. There's apart of me that loves the idea of mourinho, he wouldn't suffer fools in the team and would demand we win every game . He would also be great at winding celtic up. However, we are trying to turn rangers into a profitable successful enterprise, the amount cash we would have to spend paying off his fines and suspensions, for telling the sfa/unfair and occasional home truth would put us back in the red!

  35. Stripping the oak panelling and selling it for firewood is, I believe, Plan C, after Champions League riches do not materialise and the player training model does not work out.

  38. We know what's going to happen. If the team is competing for the league, winning games we're expected to win and giving Celtic a challenge then the majority of fans will be happy. If we're 10 points behind them by November, our new players haven't bedded in and we've just dropped points at home to Falkirk then the pitch forks will be out. It'll be the manager who gets it first, but eventually Thelwell will come under fire and finally the board if nothing changes. Sacking a manager every autumn keeps the fans from outright revolt. A decent percentage of fans couldn't care less who owns the club and who runs the club, if we're winning the league. Look at the SDM years if you think I'm exaggerating. If we're finishing the league as Champions then our new owners could strip the oak panelling from the Main Stand and sell it for fire wood and many in our support would turn up and help them shift it. We're being sold to total strangers, people with no connection or affection for our club, people who's motives we can only guess at, and I'd say the majority of our support are welcoming them with open arms and a decent number are actively cheerleading them. There's little sense of nervousness, no worry or concern from an awful lot of people. Those who do have concerns are told they're happy settling for second and have no ambition. Like most of us I saw our club teeter on the very edge of oblivion not that long ago. It amazes me how many of our support are happy to gamble it all again. It was interesting learning about Athletic Bilbao again recently. A club with an identity, with a purpose, who know exactly who they are.
