My take on yesterday centres on the lack of energy in the side. We had four/five players who did not contribute, Ojo, Aribo, Arfield, Tav'? I know we have a lot of players away on international duty, and some of them involve long journeys. We know what to expect at Tynie, it's a battle, it's frantic, it's atmospheric, it's fractured football at best. In games like Hearts away, shouldn't the manager consider the energy that Docherty brings to the midfield? Further, yesterday's opening 15-20 minutes; we missed Ryan Jack's presence, those interceptions and considered passes.4 points

Surely the target this season is winning the league? I mean that's always the target but this season it feels like a realistic ambition. So while I agree there's no need to panic after yesterday it's still very, very frustrating that we dropped points to a Hearts side low on confidence and really struggling for form. We'll drop more points this season, that's inevitable, but yesterday's performance deserves criticism I feel. Had we been peppering their goal, missing chances and simply been unable to stick one of our chances away then we could shrug our shoulders and move on safely knowing it was just 'one of those games', however that's not what happened. We were poor yesterday, lacking creativity, lacking direction, lacking composure and being too easily knocked off our game by a physical approach from Hearts. I personally don't feel we can compare ourselves to five years ago anymore. We've rebuilt, we've had a full season under Gerrard, now is time for this side to step up and play. Rangers sides that don't win matches they should win will always be criticised.3 points

A key point is that once again Alfie dug us out of a hole and I dread to think what would happen if he were to leave in January. One place we may not be is in the EL groups since again it was him who got the crucial goal against Legia. If he leaves in January I don't see us winning this league. He's currently irreplaceable.2 points

I look forward to the day when we no longer assess our progress by comparing the team today with the chaotic financial mess and League 2 football of five years ago. Because if that’s what people really think the benchmark should still be then we might as well give up now. Those days are long gone, leave them where they belong.2 points

Morelos, I thought only he and Barasic got pass marks. I'm surprised at the positive comments for Goldson, he was roundly slated on our bus going back from the game, and the general consensus is that he is clearly the 4th best of our 4 centre backs, yet is the only one certain to play. Of course there were many more disappointing performances than his yesterday, Ojo is an empty shirt when the battle is on, Arfield hasnt hit the heights this season, Davis looked like international football is too much for him, (he can play for us or NI but not both!), and of course for the second time in 3 games Tav has cost us a win with a defensive howler, which impacts on his creativity as he tries too hard to force an assist to make up for it and then nothing goes right for him. I wouldnt argue if Polster plays any time soon and Tav is "rested". Morelos was his usual handful for the opponent, drawing 2 bookings (should have been more) when he has escaped his man, and getting his goal with another cool finish. Barasic contributed and we were far more dangerous looking down that side than Tav's all day long and even more so when Kent came on. I am excited by what that partnership could develop into. With the bheasts at Pittodrie and us entertaining Motherwell after them on Sunday, we have the chance to outscore them and go back to the top. I dont expect Dolly to get anything from that game (other than bragging rights for hating us more than their guests), but if the tims win 2-0 we can go top by winning 3-0. That is the least I expect from the next round of fixtures.2 points

Yes, when he got a bit of space for his shot, I thought, 'just bend it low into the far corner, and give the 'keeper something to do', but no, he bends it high and away from goal.2 points

I thought Kamara was one of the better performers--not enough to get my motm, however. Morelos, just because he scored.2 points

They usually start on September 1st ... utterly ridiculous and takes a lot of the x-mas feeling when x-mas actually comes about.2 points

I haven’t seen the game, only the highlights and the match stats to go on. But both of those were very concerning, 1 shot on target against that lot is pathetic and Hearts had their share of chances. I’m still a bit concerned with the lack of quality in the attacking midfield positions. A strange thing to say given our position in the league yes but often away games are the real tests and we have struggled away so far.2 points

Again, this thread is another example of how differently we see things. I thought Goldson and Barisic would be the only two contenders and yet not only are some of you picking others, but you criticise Goldson's performance. And then we have Gerrard seeing something different again because he seems to continue to pick Arfield and Tav despite them have howling starts to this season. It's a game of opinions right enough.1 point

I could do that in bygone days of yore. We need quality output as well. That run and shot he had reinforced why I was unexcited about his signing (at that price). I just hope he proves me wrong.1 point

To be honest, while watching, it looked more and more like the story was released to 'unsettle' as a lot of our attacks looked to target Hickey1 point

We used Kent a bit too much (for my liking) at the start, even when there was no end-product to what he did (be it goal or assist). Kent rose to the challenge and "made us pay" 7m for him. What Kent always did, go on the park and give you 100 % and more. Harass defenders, follow attackers, try to win the ball back. Same goes for Jones and Stewart. All action players. Arfield is of that ilk too, but somewhat off the boil. Aribo can do that, if he is used by his fellow players. Ojo is here, there and everyhwere, but far too often tries stuff that may well work in the English u23 EPL as well as looking lackadaisical or disinterested at times. Perhaps that is his style, but ... When he pops up with the odd assist, super-flick or even goal, all is well. But consistency in that and effort and application has a certain Windass-feeling about it. And that is not what we need in places like Tynecastle ... and we have the players for those game. I know it is lamenting on a high level, but yesterday the all-action and -application of a pacy and tricky Jones (yep, he is injured, I know), the same from Kent and the invention and close skill control and willingness to shoot from Stewart might have served us better. Said it before, but IMHO we have a must-play-if-fit clause with Ojo in his loan deal, same as with Kent. Obviously, yesterday was all about deflection tactics to lure Porto into a mind-trap for Thursday ...1 point

I don't know about that. Neither Kent or Jones are goalscorers. A title winning team needs real goalscorers in those positions. As I say all I saw was the highlights but Kent only featured in those to show that he still shoots like an injured centre back.1 point

I'm confused why we are paying good money for Matt Polster to sit on the bench when it's clear he could be improving out right back problem.1 point

In my opinion only three players turned up for duty yesterday: Davis, Goldson, Barisic. My MOTM vote goes to Connor Goldson, who defended well and whose long ball distribution was excellent at times. A poor team performance to remind us how far we still have to travel.1 point

Arfield and Aribo returned from longish international-duty trips. Why start them? The combination of Ojo, Aribo and Arfield hasn`t clicked before ... and is, IMHO, not the best to tackle certain Scottish sides. Why start them ... AGAIN?! Not that we haven`t seen this before, but when it simply doesn`t click, why not change it sooner? Arfield and Ojo provided piecemeal stuff, the game essentially by-passed Aribo. That`s essentially 3 men removed from much of our play. Stewart rattled two Scottish teams on the trott, but only comes in late and after Kent. Tavernier. How long have we to see this? It is no witch hunt or character assassination, but once more the captain contributed to an opposition goal and handed in another sub-standard performance. His standard. Maybe SG doesn`t want to axe the captain, but there comes a point were you have to act. Polster handed in one solid performance after another ... and had Flanagan be fit, I would assume that Tav would be benched for some time now. ... which all leads to the assumption that the bucket stops with SG. As much as he can lament the lack of class, attitude and performance levels, he holds all the responsibility. Team selection, tactics and substitutions. Why have we got so many quality players and continue to stick to Plan A time and again? I long for the day when we get Jones, Stewart and Kent as the threesome behind our main striker.1 point

You know Gaffer, couple of weeks ago I got some angry responses from Bears for pointing out on Twitter that Tav's defensive inadequacy had cost us yer another goal Im temptedd to escalate inadequacy to liability such is the frequency of these howlers. I think his tendency to make crtical faux pas has given the manager a real dilemma to ponder1 point

I thought he would at least be in the squad today with Jack unavailable. Not on bench, is he unfit ? although looked ok when given a few minutes previously.1 point

Man Utd were impressive in the first half, I was thinking yesterday the only way they could have a chance is to play 5 at the back which they did. Other teams will take note on how to set up against Liverpool now. Tallys prior to Monday night football. Gribz - 17 (shouldnt have went controversial yet Im tempted to another 4 points because of Spurs goal). Chelsea Boy - 23 (great debut) Scott - 15 (Still beat me!) Compo - 16 (Victory stolen from the debut boy) Updated after MNF.1 point
