  1. The Liverpool owners who willingly go against the wishes of their manager and supporters won't hesitate to bypass Gerrard and appoint one of the established elite managers who routinely move from club to club like a pass-the-parcel game. He's a lucky man to be at Ibrox and he's smart enough to realise it.

  2. Is "reputed to be extremely wealthy" meant to make us feel better or worse do you think? Reputed to support Rangers? Reputed to be interested in football? Reputed to have a love of Scotland? Nah, just extremely wealthy. No wonder the game is in the state it is.

  3. Spurs joining the Super League, is like me walking into The Crucible, and putting 50p on the table. (Just got this rather cynical, but amusing message on Whatsapp.)

  5. I think "tiered" is the wrong word. Think of it like 1st, 2nd and 3rd class rail travel - everyone is on the same journey but all enjoying a very different experience and there are no upgrades.

  6. Might not be a bad thing. At least it would be truly competitive and with a live audience, instead of millions of armchair Asians streaming their lives away.

  7. I see the. term 'Sporting Integrity' being used a lot in relation to the new Super league. Yes, well as Rangers supporters ,we all know that the true meaning of it bears no relation to it's actual meaning. Quite funny seeing statements from English clubs, all adopting some sort of moral high ground ,when they are as much a part of the problem as anything.

  8. The tone seems to be quite conciliatory, at least from UEFA, which is astonishing. If these clubs are damaging the game so much, you punish them. For me, it's greed in itself, because they know these clubs bring in the majority of the money.

  9. If that is what the filthy rich owners of these clubs want. so be it,but they must be banned from their relative associations and from other tournaments. Fans can then make their own choice of whether they wish to follow their team in a "closed shop" and players have a good look at their contracts regards whether or not they can be made to play in this, especially those who play for their national sides if that is likely to be affected by EUFA/FIFA bans. I for one would realistically look at stopping going to football if my team were to be involved.

  10. Club 1872 is delighted to announce that following the result of our recent member poll on providing funds from Club 1872 Projects CIC towards the current RIFC share issue, Club 1872 has now purchased a further 2,150,000 shares in RIFC plc, directly from the company, at the cost of £430,000. Club 1872 Director Laura Fawkes said: “The Club 1872 Board would like to take this opportunity to thank our members for their regular donations and those in our membership and the wider support who made one-off donations towards our share issue campaign. Even though tens of millions of pounds have been invested into the club over the last few years, because of the incredible support of our membership we have been able to retain our position as a major shareholder while making a huge financial contribution to the rebuilding and ongoing development of the club. These funds have put more shares into the hands of Rangers supporters and will allow Club 1872 to continue assisting the club as it goes from strength to strength. The rebuilding process which led to our momentous 55th league victory was made possible by the commitment of supporters and investors and while Club 1872 is proud to have contributed significant sums to support the recovery, we are of course mindful of the damaging events of the past and remain committed to ensuring they are never repeated. Fans across the world have provided incredible, direct financial support to the club, but Club 1872 is the only viable vehicle to ensure that supporters retain an essential influence at a shareholder level. The events of this week across European football have once again shown how crucial it is for supporters to have a signficant say in the running of their football clubs. The RIFC Board has offered Club 1872 the opportunity to purchase more shares in the coming months and, based on that commitment, members' donations will continue to support the club as it builds on the success of this season and deals with the ongoing financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. We would encourage our members to urge family and friends to join Club 1872 as our legacy campaign progresses over the coming months. We need thousands more Rangers fans to join to help us meet our fundraising target of £2.5m for Rangers by June 2021." Club 1872

  11. This seems to have nothing at all to do with football or any notion of sporting competition ... and everything to do with a business model based on monopoly and assured income. How you regard it depends on which of those two issues is most important to you. In both sporting and business terms it appears to be a natural evolution of a process that's been operating in football for the last 20 years, since the Premier League and Sky Sports first showed what could be done to bring money and fans into the game, and UEFA allowed the "elite" clubs to dominate the Champions League. Initially, I didn't think this would work but having thought about it for a day I'm inclined to think it probably can't be stopped. Once the TV companies and main sponsors decide to move their interest to the Super League (and they will), the game will be up for UEFA, which will be forced to seek survival in an agreement with the Super League. This is what you get when you sell your clubs to American owners. You could be forgiven for thinking this plan has been quietly cooking for several years. If this monster takes root it will squeeze the life out of those clubs who have mortgaged their souls to feed at the big boys' trough. Personally, I wish these Super League clubs would just move to become actual US franchises - if they did it might improve the European game immeasurably.

  12. To overcome this morning's dehydration and pounding sore napper, I decided to peruse the social media feeds of some of our club's worse detractors this last decade. The usual suspects, you know the ones who have pounded Rangers and Rangers supporters on an industrial scale? Well, they are all, without exception, remarkably well disciplined. Literally, no mention of the game. Some claim they watched cartoons with the children, some claim to have been seduced by the improving weather, got out and did improving activities. One claimed she made cock-a-leekie soup for the first time. This is Sinn Fein levels of discipline, only financial guru(chancer), David Low has withdrawn and locked his account. The very few making any comment are on the fringes of Bampottery, Sellik Quick News inviting consideration of ra Bhoys deliberately throwing the game? The Cleansing factor is something very real for our separated brethren, the failing diseased entity must be burned clean before active support can be considered for the rising phoenix. Congratulations to ra Herald's Aidan Smith, Mourinho receives the tin-tac and creatively Gerrard is favourite to replace. Banish the scourge that has emerged from the state of being, "quietly terrified". Listening to John Kennedy, Sellik's defeat was because of a lack of confidence, belief and, intensity. Easily sorted, send Broony down the local Co-op for a quarter pound of each. I hope Scott remembers to use his Divvy number, or Peter will have him in for interview without chair? Gordon Strachan's ranting ramble was more a crie de couer for his two sons currently working at the Chamber of Secrets. PQ told Tom English he was het and his piece is relatively fair in documenting the turnaround in both clubs' fortunes. Even the Daily Record appears to accept the good ship, 'Sellik Warchest' has sunk. We are left with anecdotal tales of TVs being thrown through windows and closure of the Erskine Bridge. In that vein, I note the Scottish Rugby Union has advertised for a new Chief Executive Officer this morning. I am reliably informed the first application received by recorded delivery pre-noon, was from Dominic McKay? Sellik's trophy cabinet is cleaned out and the baw's burst. I will have to be content with the sound of deflation.

  15. No, they didn't. They won it with money that they did not earn and through buying players who were out of the reach of their rivals. I live in Liverpool and am familiar with the non-league scene, and Salford did not earn promotion in a fair manner. Neville is unhappy because his paymasters Sky are not part of it, if they were then he'd be all in. It''s his hypocrisy and the fact that after benefiting from a money distorted set-up in the past he has only just noticed that money can be a corrupting factor.

  18. I think Craig that it's fair to say this is an American proposal. It's backed by American funds and emulates a very American model of commercial sports business. It's a clash of business and sporting cultures as much as anything else. It's also probably entirely necessary if you're carrying the debt levels of some of these clubs. Without improved earnings, it's difficult to see a sustainable future for the likes of Real Madrid .... and you can hardly expect such elite and important clubs to cut their cloth like mere mortals.

  19. Safe to say that Florentino Perez was the main driving force behind it all, he was to be the saviour of football. “The new format which starts in 2024 is absurd. In 2024, we are all dead " Hopefully just his club that dies.

  21. Alex Vallance gave Rangers many years of great service. He was born on the 18th February 1860 at Shandon on the Gareloch , he died on the 31st August 1898 at Terregles Avenue Glasgow. Alex, who was also the younger brother of Rangers legend Tom, joined Rangers in 1873 when he moved to Glasgow to start his engineering apprenticeship . We have records of Alex keeping goal for the Rangers second eleven when only 14 years of age! Alex would go on to be captain of Rangers and was a player in that first Rangers team to win a Trophy, the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup in 1879. It was 16 year old Alex Vallance who proposed in 1876 that the club move from Burnbank and take the lease for ground at Kinning Park,Alex was well placed to see the advantages of the move south of the river as he like his brother Tom were apprentices in the Clutha Iron Works with P&W McLellan. Rangers would remain at Kinning Park for 11 years before moving along Paisley Road to the the Copland Road area of Ibrox . We closed the Kinning Park ground on 26th February 1887, this photograph of the Modern and Ancients Rangers team and club officials was taken the very day that Kinning Park closed..Alex Vallance is the large guy sat on the ground in front of his brother Tom who has his foot on the ball. As a young man Alex would give diving lessons into the Gareloch from the Hydroponic Hotel, today it’s the Faslane Naval Base. During the 1890’s Alex was mine host at the Red Lion Pub at 84 West Nile Street Glasgow, today it’s The Courtyard Bar. A few years ago we discovered the final resting place of Alex Vallance in the town of Helensburgh, last weekend a memorial plaque placed at the plot highlighting his contribution during the formative years of our Club. Unfortunately Alex’s stone didn’t respond well to the blast cleaning as it’s made of sandstone and well over a century old. Today as we celebrate our 55th title we remember Alex Vallance.

  22. Possibly Sky/BT would not bid, but would expect the domestic rights to be much cheaper than current rates if thoe 6 were barred in any form, the upshot is less money from TV and sponsors. You only have to look at the shirt / club sponsors to the top 6 in the PL. They are all corporate giants, whereas others in the PL have online betting and other much smaller deals. The sponsors will go where the audiance is.
    1 point
  23. Agreed, but fan base alone does not attract the sponsors. TV companies would pay half the rate now for access to the PL without those 6 in the competition. You can see by the fact that JP Morgan has put up £3.5bn and they are the first and probably not the last investor. I would hate to see this come off and think if players, managers and supporters unite they together with legislation could halt this move. Disagreed - Never want to see Sellik in the PL, and surely it would go against their Independence support for both Scotland and certainly Ireland !!!

  24. I think you'll find moral outrage being replaced by financial reality in the very near future. It's inconceivable the Super League hasn't factored in how to bring the large broadcasters and sponsors on board.

  25. To be brutally honest, the only thing that interests me about this Super League proposal is the effect it has on Rangers and at the moment we're so dependent on UEFA money that the consequences of severely devalued UEFA competitions could significantly constrain our development. But it wouldn't kill us off.

  26. Not necessarily as the club need a lot of cash to keep us going until we get the season ticket cash in. Saying that, he has been on boards of directors with people from the Middle East who appear to have a lot of cash (Sheikh Al Qahtani, Abdulla Al Mansoori) and the former MD of Morgan Stanley, so who knows if it's part of a bigger picture.

  31. A year with no revenue from hospitality hasn't helped it's one of the reasons the panic button has been pressed but let's face it as an industry football clubs are very badly managed if I ran a large construction outfit these days the way these jokers fun their clubs I would be in trouble. Another thing suppose the clubs involved get banned from their leagues by the association's and a further UEFA ban were will that leave international teams without these players And given that most of these clubs are soaked in debt it makes me laugh when the Madrid chairman says it's about saving football.

  33. I think the Super League is a far better business model for its member clubs. For the rest it probably condemns them to second and third tier football in perpetuity. In the Far East, people wear Man Utd or Barcelona shirts because they believe their local teams are worthless. It seems to me inevitable that that's where we're heading now. Give it 20 years and the unchallengeable power of these to clubs will suck the life out of not only the European arena but will probably go on to shape the structure of the game across the world.

  34. I don't hold out much hope for being able to apply meaningful sanctions. When you see the financial strength behind the Super League, you know that teams of the best lawyers have been gaming this situation for many months and will bury the FA or UEFA in court for as long as it takes to see their proposal fulfilled. We'll see, it will certainly be more entertaining than watching the Champions League.

  39. Of course, BBC Scotland's Irishman, English, misses the point that when his much vaunted sellik side, and players, were lording it, the Rangers' team contained, with respect to them all, as triers, such as Russell Martin and Ross McRorie at CB, Andy Halliday out of position at LB, Holt and Dorrans in midfield, Jason Cummings up front, and so on. Sellik domination was, as its euro adventures indicated, little more than that of a cock strutting on a dungheap. The more Rangers' succeed, now, the more spit and polish will be applied to rahoops team and players of that era. (Did Rodgers' "Invincibles" lose to Lincoln Red Imps? Or have I got that wrong?)

  40. The regularity with which we now swat them aside is healing a lot of hurt. The memory of them toying with our Championship teams is at last being put in its proper context. We’re no longer a club that’s arrived after a long and difficult journey - we’re a club preparing for dominance. Stephen Gerrard and his entire staff and players deserve more than they know.
