Touting one’s horn? Disgraceful. Ladies and young children might be reading this board. On second thoughts, they’re probably not. ”Tooting” might be safer. “blowing” should be avoided. The mischief is put right by ditching “horn” for “trumpet”5 points

He’s not that great a player, but a £10 million bid is derisory? A bit of a contradiction? If there's no release clause, he doesn't sign the contract and there's no £10 million.5 points

If anyone seriously thought that when we signed this young guy 3 years ago that we would be getting £10million , you would have been sectioned . I love the guy as a footballer but this is a fantastic deal for us .5 points

Aribo is clearly a great player. That said his first 2 seasons every time he hit top form he got injured and took a while to come back to form. Last year he had a serious dip in form for months from Jan after starting brilliantly. We can replace him I am sure of it.4 points

I did too - when I saw Aribo play the League One play off final for Charlton he looked an absolute baller - wanted us to sign him when I saw him and that summer we did. I had no doubts the boy would be great up here and, largely he has. He is worth way more than 10 million, of that I have no doubt - but last year of his contract dictates what we can do - and the answer is largely nothing. If he isnt signing we have to get the best we can.... so to get his release clause value is pretty solid business4 points

I'm this scenario, Aribo would just see out the last year of his contract and walk away for nothing. Don't you think we've offered Aribo an extension? If he decided not to sign it, what are we to do? Lock him in a room and refuse to release him until he signs? £10M for a player who could sign a pre-contract in less than 6 months isn't derisory, it's good business.4 points

How is it crap? Crap would be losing him for nothing in less than 6 months time.4 points

Just cannot understand how anyone can think this is anything but a great deal. (Providing we get the £10m by whatever method.) Aribo has been a great player for us. Despite Bowyer's protestations when he signed, we developed him into a better player, he's won two medals and played in a major European final (in which he scored). However, he now wants to move on. It could be argued that those 70 games last season was just too many as he has looked a shadow of the player he was. Regardless of where in England he goes, he will play considerably less games given the superior squads and lack of Euro football. That and the huge increase in wages will compensate I'm sure. We will miss him but I think the time is right for him to move on.4 points

I think we should just pick random Rangers supporters from Twitter and the forums to conduct our transfer negotiations. They clearly know how to do it much better than the people employed to do it.2 points

Yeah but I guess it all depends on how deals and contracts are structured. They got more than that for Edouard but also had to stump up 40% sell-on fee to PSG - admittedly that would be the contract between clubs rather than between player and club. But as has already been said, we may not have gotten Aribo in the first place had we not agreed to a sell-on clause being inserted into the contract.2 points

Just thought I'd drop this in here.2 points

Quite right to hold them there it stops the media rats up here from getting news.2 points

Whos Bogonda? Not seen him mentioned yet, I assume from a little help from Uncle Google, Théo Bongonda?2 points

Aribo played 70 matches last season, and, now, it seems that he will leave -for So'ton, apparently- and receive considerably more money for considerably less work. In another occupation, I should term this a proper promotion. Despite this, it is a step down for him, as is the case for the vast majority who leave, and playing at Ibrox, for Rangers, is likely to be the highlight of his career.2 points

This is the perfect scenario, for us: sign young, hungry players with raw ability, for next to nothing; get them playing a lot of games, developing their all-round game; then sell after 2-3 years. That's why I have been saying that Morelos and Kamara should have been sold last year or the year before. (Kamara less so because he's signed a new deal, so we can extend his stay a little.)2 points

I don't like to tout my own horn, but, I did. I feel the same with Kamara, too. It took some of you a while to come around to recognising Kamara's ability.2 points

If he goes to the Saints good luck,as it is more than likely a wage increase as he is unlikely to play in Europe and have "Ibrox" nights. However he might conceivably use it as a stepping stone to bigger clubs if he improves at the same rate as he did here.2 points

It really isn't. It's good business.2 points

compo, we play in Scotland. If we want to attract young English prospects up here, then contracts like Aribo's are all part of that. I sometimes read Rangers forums and wonder where people get their ideas from...it certainly isn't in the real world.2 points

Considering we got him for next to nothing, we've had great value for money, he's going into the last year of his contract and most importantly, has a £10m release clause, I'd say £10m is a fantastic return. This is exactly what we need to be doing more of.2 points

An opening for young Lowry to step up2 points

That isn't true though. They got 12 for Ajer and over 14 for Edouard in the same circumstances. I'd like to think we’d have got around that number if not for the release clause, he's certainly worth it.1 point

Agree with most here in that £10M for a player with one year left is about max for a Scottish club to get. The fact we can get a percentage of any sell-on may well see us earn more in a couple of years as Southampton have a good record of doing that themselves. Feel sorry for Aribo that this is the club he is going to, utter dross and a certain bottom half club fighting relegation. From Europa final and the atmosphere of those Euro nights at Ibrox to sleepy hollow and regular pumpings with nobody even noticing. I wish him all the very best and I hope his manager finds the right slot and system to get the best out of him. Thanks for some special performances Joe, and of course for that goal in Seville that looked for a short time like making you a legend.1 point

Absolutely, I had Aribo as the one who would be our record sale a long time ago. Unfortunately the release clause prevents that being the case, he's easily worth more than 10 and he’ll show that in the EPL. And yes Kamara is the other who I think would most easily slot into an EPL side.1 point

Absolutely boils my piss to see a like Fulham and Forest splashing the cash like it’s going out of fashion. TV deals have priced us out of the transfer market and I hate it. anyway, great to see we can bring some cash in for Aribo if we are not getting him to extend. Ten million will do as others have said it’s better than a free and sets a benchmark for Morelos and Kent if they don’t want to extend. hopefully we get to reinvest the full 10 million and it doesn’t go to covering operating costs like the Patterson/Gerrard money.1 point

Maybe one that gives the seller the upper hand in any transfer they have had long enough to give him an extension that way we can dictate the price ,in my opinion he’s not that great a player only an asset to be sold at maximum profit and if it was handled correctly we would be rubbing our hands not being over the moon with a derisory 10 million .1 point

What, sign a player for 250k, get 2 good years out of him, and punt him for 10 million?. Aye, terrible business.1 point

It was an opinion. I am aware that football matches/seasons can go very differently to how you think it will go. That said, I'm convinced (you don't have to agree) that is what would happen (as things stand). In reallity, as things stand....are going to change. We really need to recruit well this summer but we won't really fully know how good or bad the recruitment has been until further down the line. Nor is it simply about how big the budget is (although it tends to be very important). As for the '2 games would have meant 56',.....If my auntie had baws comes to mind. We had a soft centre that meant we couldn't put together a long enough run of wins to win the league. This is still mostly Gerrards team and IIRC in 3 of the last 4 seasons, they have effectively handed the title to Celtic, post winter break. With regards to continental success. That same team built by Gerrard have done fantastically well on a consistent basis. I think the Europa League is somewhere that suits us wrt being competitive (and it has motivated players to greater heights). Unfortunately, finance means so much in the modern game. Now that mostly OUR exploits have earned the SPFL winners direct access to CLGS, that means an opportunity for us or them to take a significant step to opening up a financial gulf if one team were to get the CL money 2 or 3 seasons on the spin. Not only that but direct access to the CL means summer transfer business can be more proactive. I think Malmo/Gerrard reaction can be used as an example of what can happen when things are up in the air. In the fairly recent past Celtic have lost numerous CL qualifiers with players who were on the cusp of a move and harmoney was in short supply. Throwing toys out of pram/forcing move...Boyata one year, Dembelee another and then there was Lennon with his qualifier exit "some players don't want to be here"......shows what can happen when squad renovation isn't done in a timely manner (and you employ a waster as manager). Reaching a European Final and the associated income was very welcome but it is not something that will happen every season. Bottomline,...these next two months are huge for us recruitment wise (and outgoing/player trading model) and obviously, on the pitch with FOCUS on the CL qualifiers.1 point
