  1. I would be ecstatic with Martinez -- or someone akin to him -- but he'll not be everyone's cup of tea: Roberto Martínez and Brendan Rodgers: the flawed disciples of Pep Guardiola https://www.theguardian.com/football/these-football-times/2016/mar/07/roberto-martinez-brendan-rodgers-pep-guardiola-everton-liverpool It's too long to post, but it's an interesting read.

  2. Derek Parlane is a legend of the famous 1972 cup winners cup squad and a two time treble winner. Inducted into the hall of fame he has immersed himself in our great history with massive contributions in the light blue of our club. But Parlane was before my time, so I have only ever seen footage. He was of course a hero to my Father, his brothers and indeed his own Father, everyone speaking highly of the man crowned ‘the king of Ibrox Park’ https://fourladshadadream.wordpress.com/2018/03/21/one-to-one-with-derek-parlane/

  3. I'm not sure that we can look long term at the moment, although that's not to say we can't continue to develop our youths. Yes, Rodgers may be an idealist, but he's got it to work in Scotland with a squad that cost £34m, and that's not including the loan players. We could make it work too if we spent that much but we're not in that market. We need to be more realistic.

  4. From Rousseau's Guardian article: "When it comes down to it, most managers can be divided into two broad categories: pragmatists and idealists. Pragmatism adapts to meet the needs of the team. Rather than pursuing any long-term holistic vision, the raison d’etre is to win football matches in the short-term and everything else, such as style of play and how pleasing it is on the eye, is secondary." After having Warburton and Pedro, who I'd argue are idealists, do we as a club need the stability a pragmatist would bring, rather than an idealist like Martinez?

  5. Suggested questions: - what is our best 11? - if we could only add one top quality player, what is the key position we need to fill/replace? - should we recruit players over 30? If so, have there been examples of success in the past? - If we win the cup, should Murty be the manager? - Now that possession, shots on target, etc are outdated measures of a team's success, what metrics should we use? (I'm sure Rousseau and a few others - including me - will enjoy that one, although not sure if that's subject is an acquired taste) - What is the most important attribute in a manager? - What transfer targets should we have? (Including any rumours) - what is the handball law - exactly (it annoys me that this is misquoted in many games) - why are there exceptions to every rule? - is Club 1872 doing a good job? - what are the big issues that the board needs to address? - if not King, who? - which of our current crop of youngsters can make it in OUR senior team? - based on our current team, what league and in what position would we be in if we played in England? I seem to remember the theme tune to "question of sport" contained the line .... "there are more questions than answers, and the more I find out, the less I know". That definitely applies to me, but I won't be offended if none of these are picked. Either way I can't wait to hear it. Good luck ?

  6. Burning ambition Rangers-daft Oli McBurnie opens up on failed Gers move and reveals Kris Boyd and Nikica Jelavic were his boyhood heroes Ibrox boss Graeme Murty showed an interest in the Swansea hitman in January - before he moved on loan to English Championship outfit Barnsely. SCOTLAND new boy Oli McBurnie admits he dreams of playing for Rangers one day. Ibrox boss Graeme Murty showed interest in the Swansea hitman in January – before he moved to Barnsley on loan. McBurnie has been a success in the Championship but revealed his ambition is to star for his boyhood heroes. He said: “There were murmurs about Rangers in January but nothing ever happens easily or simply for me. “I got told about 3pm on deadline day that nothing was going to happen and I had a certain amount of clubs to pick from. “I ended up choosing Barnsley and it’s going well for me at the minute. “Would I play for Rangers down the line? Of course. “I grew up supporting them and one day I would love to pull on the jersey. “We’ll just have to see how my career goes and see if I am lucky enough to pull it on.” McBurnie was brought up in Leeds but gets his love of Gers from dad Neil and granny Morag. He said: “Why Rangers? I never really had any choice. “There are photos of me going into school in my Rangers tops and Scotland tops. “You always support who your old man supports, don’t you? I don’t think anyone has much choice. “I don’t hide it on social media. It helps that I’m in a different country. “If I was playing in Scotland, I don’t think I would be able to get away with it. “I like to have a good laugh on Twitter and Instagram with the fans. A bit of banter never hurt anyone. “I’m a Rangers fan. I’m not going to hide it. You get a bit of stick for it, but it is what it is. “Growing up, I loved Kris Boyd and Nikica Jelavic. I remember being gutted when he left to go to Everton. “There have been some ridiculously good players at Rangers over the years, but those were the ones I looked up to. “I was in the back garden shouting ‘JELAVIC!’ when I was younger playing football.” https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/2391284/rangers-oli-mcburnie-kris-boyd-nikica-jelavic-dream-scotland-boyhood-heroes/

  7. What can we, as a support, do to help the performances at Ibrox? Should the club give us a look at new home and away strip options and ask us to decide on our favourite? What can Club1872 do to get more supporters involved/contributing? Could the SLO be more contactable and helpful to certain groups, such as disabled fans or Union Bears?

  9. Fod hasn't had a great few weeks IMO but he's still an excellent 'keeper and it wouldn't be easy nor cheap to replace him. I know people get annoyed at his distribution but generally he's very good with the ball at his feet and that's something not many goalies have.

  10. I think confidence plays a big roll in that too. Look at Tennis. One game they are smashing everything into the corners and then the next everything is 2 inches out depending on who they are playing.

  11. That is just media fueled speculation mate. IMO the Rangers board have disproved that idea already with their business in January and the fact that they rebuffed offers for Morelos.

  15. Yes, I'm one of those fans I'm afraid. There was a period of about 2/3 years during the NIAR years where I just couldn't get excited about the majority of games I attended. It's perhaps strange but I'm enjoying it more now that we have a clear mission but with lots of risk involved. Back then the only doubt was about how many we'd win by. That's fun for a little while but not sustainable. I do however understand Gonzo's point above about stopping their winning run, and I could be convinced to sacrifice a couple of years of decent football to get 55.

  16. suggested questions: How do we improve the standard of refereeing in Scotland? What should be the priorities of maintenace/improvements to Ibrox? Leaving aside individuals, what is the best fit for Rangers in terms of general philosophy - Scottish, non-Scot British or Foreign Manager?

  17. We need to win. I couldn't care less if we play rubbish football in doing so.

  20. What I’ve heard from a very good media source is he was ready to sign but King told him at the last minute he was going to reconsider the compensation deal with the sheep. McInnes has a good relationship with Milne and didn’t want to be part of it.

  23. I'm baffled too, but very thankful. If ever there was a dodged bullet, he was it. Imagine losing but also having to put up with that 'style' of play. No thanks!

  25. If it's true, it's probably the only appointment I could be excited about. Style of football is as important as success to me and he's one of very few managers who has a style I'd love to watch.

  26. No mate , the meeting with Jones was about Martinez joining , or if he would be prepared to join after the world cup , as far as I,m led to believe there have been 2 meetings.

  27. Against Celtic, it was obvious late in the first half that there was an issue in the midfield and Goss was really struggling. He could have made the change at half time but didn't, and that led to the winner. Nothing to do with the players not doing what they've been told, but a tactical issue. Against Killie, he decided to play Cummings up front on his own and again it was clear in the first half that it wasn't working and yet again he delayed making the change, and thus making us easier to play against. I'm sure Murty does know more about football than me, but it doesn't mean that he doesn't make mistakes that I, and many others, can see.

  28. Windass sure has pace to burn and a good shot too, but that would be fine for games against teams which want to play football too or who have to open up and thus leave space to run into. Killie soaked up all of our pressure and hit us on the break ... and Windass was not creative enough in these games to have any significant impact. WIth Dorrans still out, I wouldn't even mind putting Cummings alongside Morelos and Candeias, as the former two are pretty mobile, and able to cover the left flank with Murphy in the middle. In days gone by, I wouldn't have gone that route, since Miller was constantly roving about and leaving spaces open where he should be as a striker, but these four know where they have to be and are quick enough to be there.

  29. No. Pep's philosphy is based on Juego de Posicion: were players have specific tasks and responsibilities within a zoned pitch depending on the phase of the game. He literally instructs the players to take up a position and what they must do, and then how the others move to compensate. Up to the 18-yard box where it comes down to the player to put it in the net. Henry has talked about it; how he was yelled at for moving out of his position, despite actually scoring, because it hampered the rest of the team. I'm not criticising Murty; he's done a good job. I agree with your sentiments regarding the Celtic game, although he take the blame too for not being able to change it. I'm just stating compo's Pep analogy was wrong. He is from a school of philosophy that literally instructs the players what to do and where to go. Murty doesn't utilise that philosophy.

  30. I don't think it's him, but his assistant. Graeme Jones. We're not getting Martinez; he's only just started with Belgium and he's out of our league.

  33. Mac, nobody here has a clue what is happening. The diddies at The Sun and Record who have absolutely NO insight into what is going on inside Ibrox are throwing out any name available or inventing Emails from "Bears" making recommendations. What is going to happen close season will happen. I suspect the board already know they themselves are increasingly under the microscope and will have to do all they can to placate the support. Watch out for "an announcement will be made in the short future" note to be stapled to the season ticket renewal letter. I for one won't be sitting on the chanty expecting a managerial superstar to arrive.

  34. We are purely an emotional investment we have nothing to offer potential investors anything other than an emotional return, outside investors will like Close Brothers demand their pound of flesh. When your business plan relies upon qualifying for the Europa League group stages sustainability ain't coming along any time soon. Murty has done nothing to justify being offered the position permanently and he won't be.

  35. Foderingham to me was an excellent keeper, despite the odd feck up, with the ball at his feet when we played in the lower divisions. He doesn't have the luxury of that now and imo has been given orders not to play about and to simply hoof the ball out. He isn't as good as a keeper as the rest there. I'll agree with most of the goalies you quoted apart from Klos - fantastic shot stopper that he was, we ended up changing our whole team formation due to his inability to kick a ball more than 5 yards. Playing two centre halfs on the 18 yard box is simply inviting disaster.

  36. Better than Cammy Bell but much less competent than Woods or Klos and without the match-saving genius of the goalie or even, to a lesser extent, McGregor. Alexander was a better ‘keeper.

  37. Really don't see where folks are coming from we were in no way the dominant team, sure we had bulk of possession, but did not utilise it properly. What went wrong? main thing IMO was why make one pass when two will do really gave Killie time to re-organise.Too many times where the ball could have gone to a wide player but was passed via a central player nobody had confidence to make the "killer" pass.

  39. What is becoming clear to me on this thread and on others, is that it should be OK for us to let off smoke bombs etc because they don't/can't cause harm....however, if they are thrown my opposition fans then they are lethal & said fans should be hunted down like vermin. Our fans are obviously more responsible & if we did use in a dangerous manner, it would be the fault of the Scot Govt or the Police anyway. Our fans should also be allowed to behave in any manner they wish, coz other fans do it & that makes it ok. Should we also welcome back & encourage organised gang fights before/after/during games, coz that would be a right laugh for everyone.... I may be wrong....but I though civilised society had move on from all that???
