  1. No one can take a crusade against sectarianism seriously while the state funds it in the guise of seperate education for catholics. The police should be arresting the politicians if they want to change anything. This was a snobs law designed to persecute the lower classes just like the mup on alcohol we now have. Thats another one that will be repealed.

  2. On the 17th March 1877 Rangers contested our first ever Scottish Cup Final against Vale of Leven. Our Scottish cup campaign of 1877 saw the young Rangers, after trips in earlier rounds to places such as Mauchline in Ayrshire, incredibly reach the Scottish Cup Final where the mighty Vale of Leven lay in wait. Vale had caused a sensation of their own in an earlier round by handing Queens Park their first ever defeat on Scottish soil. The final was to be played on 17th March 1877 at Hamilton Crescent in Partick and our lads got to work to make sure that they were prepared. Moses fondly recalled tuck-ins of ham, eggs and steaks every morning after a 6am rise, then a 10 mile training walk and a 90 minute session with the football. This was all in an attempt to make themselves bigger and stronger. The lads would train for the Final at their Kinning Park ground often late into the night and because of this the local residents daubed the Rangers ‘The Moonlighters’ a name which would stick with us for a few years. To say that the final of 1877 caught the imagination of the Glasgow public is a massive understatement as thousands made their way to Hamilton Crescent. The match first played on the 17th March ended in a 1-1 draw with the Rangers goal coming via a Vale own goal. A crowd of over 8,000 attended that day to see this team of youngsters take on the mighty Vale. The draw actually saw the young Rangers team carried off shoulder high by the crowd. The replay took place on 17th April William Dunlop scored in normal time ,that game also ended 1-1.We then went into extra time William Dunlop scored again but the goal controversially was disallowed. Glasgow Professor of Surgery George B McLeod was standing behind the goal and was prepared to take an oath and vow that the ball had actually went through the goal and struck him on the head then landed back in the goal-keepers arms! The match umpires were consulted. One umpire gave the goal one umpire said no goal and the third who was on the field of play said he was too far away and couldn’t say for certain. The goal never stood. This led to supporters of both sides invading the playing field, bedlam ensued and the match was duly abandoned. Of course the moral of this particular story is that The Rangers were being cheated by referees 10 years before Celtic were even formed! The Scottish Cup of 1877 was eventually decided at first Hampden, with Vale winning 3-2. This series of games saw the transformation of the Rangers from what was essentially a boys club into a respected football club one which caught the imagination and admiration of the Glasgow working class. The Rangers were never to look back.

  3. The OBFA got repealed because those who wanted it in the first place turned out to be the worst offenders.

  4. I'll be honest - they annoy me. I'm fed up hearing they create all the atmosphere. Their atmosphere annoys me. Stupid boring chants and songs and daft behaviour. If you want a real atmosphere give us The Sash and other old favourites. The boys are doing what they can and I wish them no ill will btw.

  7. I think today was the day that convinced me Murty should not get the job full time. losing to 10 man Celtic was bad enough but today was even worse what was he thinking today about playing Cummings up front on his own ? Cummings can't play that role.

  8. That game lost Murty any chance he had of the job. Ive never seen a match where not 1 player never got pass marks. Absolutely woeful. Slow. Uninterested. Lazy. Slack.

  9. In my view this is the very root of it, the origin of a them and us outlook. They have been made all manner of offers to end it such as educating them all in the same schools while even having entirely seperate classes but with simply a common entrance to the school. Not good enough, turned it down, don't even want to use the same gate.

  11. The board are faced with their biggest and most important decision in approx. 8 games time , one IMHO they simply cannot get wrong , and that's appointing a new and experienced manager . Firstly , I like GM , I think hes a thoroughly decent guy and a great youths coach , I've seen at first hand at Auchenowie how he is with the youths , however he is not ready for this job , I said when he was appointed that he had been thrown under the bus by the board and I still believe it , today was symptomatic of the types of results we have had this year, where we simply are not set up to break teams down that sit in. Though the rebuilding that was started under GM and MA has born some fruit , the midfelders especially are too young and inexperienced to shoulder the responsibility of playing week in week out , against celtic we had 3 ,21 year olds, one of which was playing only his 12th or 13th senior game . There have been rumours of meetings with Roberto Matinez's No2 , whether that's fantasy or not who knows , but we need an experienced manager to take us on to the next phase of our journey . I only hope the board and MA are up to the task . One last thought or rather point , this seasons debacle at home is our worst set of results at Ibrox since 1914 .

  12. Like most Rangers fans ahead of last week's match against Celtic, I was confident of a good result. Not 'cocky' as some of the more conspirational of Celtic 'legends' have since suggested - just, for the first time in a long time, cautiously optimistic we could beat our rivals. And, for much of the game, that optimism was well served. Ironically, it wasn't until Celtic had a man sent off that that belief seemed to wane. The Parkhead men sat in and, as was the case before our resurgence after the New Year, we struggled to break them down, moved the ball far too slowly and then conceded an avoidable goal on the counter. The heads went down, our chance of a win was gone and even a deserved draw fell out of our grasp as the otherwise excellent Alfredo Morelos missed a sitter late on. With all that in mind, it's been a difficult week contemplating what if. Many fans have been understandably sore and several players have been criticised for poor performances whilst Graeme Murty has also had his influence questioned. Indeed, it's not easy to take strong issue with such comments. Quite simply, we didn't play well enough and didn't react positively to Celtic losing a man. Morelos may have missed the literal open goal, but the whole team we're guilty of same. However, I do think we have to avoid being too despondent and there's no need to throw the baby out with bath water. First things first, for the second match in a row, we did go toe to toe with Celtic and anyone denying that's progress needs to re-evaluate their outlook. Yes, we conceded three cheap goals but they were also great finishes from an experienced team that cost (and costs) considerably more than ours. We also missed three good chances but I'd be more worried if we weren't creating these. All things considered we're not too far away and, if we can maintain confidence (and realism), we can continue to close in. As such, a returning to winning ways this weekend is vital. Not just in terms of re-energising disappointed fans but to show Aberdeen, Hibs and Kilmarnock that we're better than them. And a win against Killie - a team we've failed to beat this season - would go a long way to securing second place in the league. Yes, we're down after last Sunday's defeat but given Killie's midweek penalty kick defeat in the Scottish Cup, we're not the only ones hurting. It will be fascinating to see whom out of Murty and Steve Clarke can lift their dressing room most effectively. In that sense, some fans suggest a few changes to the team might work best. Perhaps it's time to test a different combination in midfield? What's our best central defensive partnership now David Bates is also unavailable? Should Jason Cummings replace Morelos in attack or can they play together? Are we getting the most out of our wide players? When will Dorrans, Wallace and McCrorie return to the squad? It's actually difficult to answer such questions easily as all points put forward have merit. After an impressive start (much like Emerson Hyndman last season) Sean Goss hasn't been quite as good in the last two games. In defence Alves and Cardoso didn't cover themselves in glory either last Sunday. Meanwhile, surely a rest for Morelos wouldn't go amiss at some point? The problems occur in that not enough of the fringe players available to us have played enough lately to really warrant selection. That's one of my main gripes with Murty so far in that he doesn't rotate his side - not necessarily from the start of games either - he just doesn't make enough changes during games and certainly not early enough; even from comfortable positions. This means that as much as someone like Jason Holt can usually get himself up to speed there a few others who look as if they could step into the side and provide an upsurge of not just energy but quality. Cummings is one but there are doubts over Miller, Herrera, Dodoo, O'Halloran and Halliday whom, Miller aside in his best form, are unlikely to bring a spark to the team. Yes, we can ask questions of Josh Windass' contribution over 90mins but would any of these players offer more? Not as long as Dorrans remains short of full fitness. A change of system then? This is perhaps more likely but it's uncertain Murty's preferred backup diamond formation is suitable tomorrow given Killie are not only strong in central midfield but have a real threat in wide areas. Yes, two up front against the likes of Ayr Utd might be agreeable but, tomorrow at least, it could be considered a risk. However, we are at home against a side that had to play 120mins on Wednesday night so it's not beyond the realms of possibility. It would certainly address the issue of our tactics being too predictable at times. All in all though, and as I touched on earlier and in the article title, tomorrow's system and personnel might not be as crucial as the more fundamental aspects of football. Motivation and man-management after morale-sapping setbacks are vital and a huge part of breeding success in teams. Indeed, post-red card that's what arguably won Celtic the game last weekend and I'd argue it's been a big part of Steve Clarke's impressive work at Rugby Park this season. Our response to setback will be most enlightening at Ibrox tomorrow - players, manager and fans alike. Possible team (4-2-3-1):

  14. If any UBs read this, the Killie fans were singing the same crap as you today. That's how generic and boring it is. STICK TO RANGERS SONGS. We have a great repertoire, why copy foreign crap?

  15. Killie were well worth their win. We were exposed on our right side where they found space and cut us open. Every second ball was theirs in mid field, we couldn't break down a packed defence that made us look pedestrian in our build up. Got to think Murty's got a bit more learning to do

  21. Maybe. If that’s the case, then he should have made it much more clear as he never mentioned that at all. Just how Greig used to fire free kicks over the bar all the time.

  23. On days like these you wonder why you bother. Last week was bitterly disappointing but at least we gave them a game - or half a game. Today was utter dross. We could still be playing now and we wouldn’t have scored.

  26. Reinforces how misplaced the faint glimmer of optimism ahead of last week's game was. We flattered to deceive for a few weeks but the last two results prove we are still a long way away. Sorry to be negative but that was nowhere near good enough once again - and at home again.

  28. Totally gutless. Lots of tough matches between now and the end of the season if we want to secure second place. We can't afford to keep playing like that. The only positive I can think of is that Murty acted quicker than usual to remove Goss.

  30. Don’t know if this falls under the fake news category but I’ve noticed something sinister. A while ago there was a story about the Henrik Larsson Foundation and how a night was run and it turns out that none of the money ended up going to charity. Strangely enough, there are links to this story online but whenever you try and click on it you get the “oops we cannot find this story”. Very strange...

  34. Andy Dibble, goalkeeper, gained three caps for Wales between 1986/89. He joined Rangers in 1997, so he did not get capped while playing for Rangers. He joined Rangers on a free xfer from Manchester City. When Andy Goram was injured he was played against Celtic in his first match for Rangers and had a great game in a 1-0 win for the famous.

  35. Pleased for him and I hope he continues to play his football at Rangers. He clearly divides the support but I've seen the support divided for 50 years so why would we expect Josh Windass to change things.

  37. Here we are five days after several of our fans, one a child, were hurt by the those vermin squatting in the Broomloan, and the club have not uttered one word in their defence. Frankly that's not good enough, the fan's safety seems to have a indifferent attitude from this board , that's an appalling situation for a club like Rangers.

  38. You are missing the sub text behind all this stewarty - title stripping is still on the table. The moonhowlers are determined to succeed. Given the chair shuffling currently going on at the SFA and SPFL it wouldn't surprise me if that's what happens. Liewell is playing the long game without having his own name in the frame.
