The biggest mistake with Kent wasn't running down his contract but paying £7m for him in the first place. There's no way we should have been spending £7m on anyone at that time.5 points

I wasn’t overwhelmed when Arfield signed on and a couple of years ago I wouldn’t have been much bothered by him leaving. Now he’s the only one of the five whom I see as having any residual worth. Good honest tradesman.5 points

Aye, well, nobody told me the rumours so I'll just need to remain ignorant. If only there was someone, anyone, that could spread the rumour to this thread.4 points

Morelos I don’t mind so much but the Kent one hurts. 7 million we paid for him.4 points

All five players have enjoyed various important moments at the club and at their very best were fine servants. However, it's definitely better they now move on as we look to improve the side for the challenges ahead. With respect to Morelos and Kent, we can't allow the same situation to occur again in terms of valuable assets being allowed to run down their contracts.4 points

Sorry to see Arfield go he always gave 100% , Helander will probably come good now Kent will end up in the English championship and big bawheid can be the poster boy for some hamburger shop3 points

Those things are used too much to excuse failures over the past years though. Celtic have been comfortably the best team in Scotland since 55. That's a huge failure, regardless of the EL run.3 points

Sorry about Arfield he would have been a good squad member,McGregor father time has caught up,Kent/Morelos thaks for the memories and Helander too fragile but good player(Roofe should be similarly let go IMO).3 points
-
Not always. Sometimes we can win a watch and get lucky with a £1million signing like Morelos. We could have sold him before 55 for big money and that’s a debate that will live on. But 1 million for that kind of return is ok. What we cannot do is spend 7 million on a player and not recoup some of the cash. We don’t have the finances and will quickly return to the financial mire if repeated. Similar for Helander and Roofe. It’s madness. Nearly 15 million of talent walking away for nothing. Puts that 1 million for Morelos into perspective imo.3 points

Seriously disappointed we're punting ScottyArf, he's a smashing player. However, I see this as Beale moving on, bigger and better hopefully.3 points

Slight reservations about Arfield but otherwise I just have a sense of relief that we're finally moving on. I only hope there are others in the departure lounge who we think we can sell for money.3 points

Or a Gary Sprake. I remember a Home International at Hampden in the late sixties, Sprake took a through ball with one hand and threw it from the middle of his box towards a lurking Wyn Davies in the centre circle. The throw cleared the half way line and their was a collective wow from the crowd. Interestingly about Pat Jennings, it seemed he made most of his saves with his feet?3 points

Oh for a Pat Jennings; comes out, takes the ball with one hand. Mind you, he did have hands like shovels.3 points

Lawrence, IMHO, will if fit start the season as the left sided attacking mid that Kent presently holds. That was where he kind of started this season, as we didnt really play with wingers. Agreed on him being our best player too - he was a massive loss when he got injured2 points

Good luck to Kane Ritchie-Holser who as joined Dunfermline on a permanent basis after a loan spell there. https://www.dafc.co.uk/story.php?t=Kane+Ritchie-Hosler+returns&ID=144002 points

Now its been confirmed, I wish them all the best in their careers and thank them all for their contributions, especially 55 and EL runs. Hopefully see them all back at Ibrox as fans - Once a Ranger, always a Rangers.2 points

I am disappointed to lose Arfield but the others are well past their sell by date.2 points

That’s a false dilemma. We’ll never know what would have happened if we’d sold him when we had a chance. I think we’d have replaced him with a better player.2 points

I'm intrigued by Dowell. He was held in similar regard to Cantwell as a youngster. The difference being Cantwell has had more PL experience. Another technical #10.2 points

Is it because he calls Autumn 'Fall'?2 points

Just because we only spent 1 million on him doesnt mean it hurt not capitalising on him when at the peak of his value. Had we sold him for 15 million we could have been out of sight of Celtic. Instead we pinned our hopes on him and it was a bust (admittedly hindsight plays a great deal in that) - but either way, just because you don't spend much doesnt mean it doesnt hurt when you don't capitalise on maximum value, especially when you have finances like ours.2 points

It may be one is kept for coaching purposes or the the other might never reach full fitness again.2 points

Surprised to see Arfield move on. The manager must have a better alternative. The other four should all have been moved on earlier.2 points

Bournemouth are a strange team and were 0-2 up at Arsenal and should have won. Quite capable of scoring and play nice football.2 points

What a wonderful day. Never thought some of those players would leave. It should have been a long time ago and hanging onto them cost us in more ways than one. Big opportunity for Beale to put those freed up wages to better use now!2 points

Was my hero growing up - met him at the Arsenal POTY awards in 1981 when I was a nipper. Got my photo taken with him and I had to stand 6 steps behind him to be same height.... I can confirm he has hands like shovels 🤣2 points

Hopefully something the Rangers Charity Foundation can get behind. Going to speak to my RSC and see if there is anything we can do to support this.2 points

I’ve got two issues signing Jack Butland as our first choice GK for next season:- 1) what happens if we sign him on a 3 year contract at £30-40k p.w. & he starts making too many mistakes like Jon McLaughlin did start last season? 2) if he’s so good why has he hardly played these past 2 seasons? Surely someone down south would have signed him by now? I think we need to give McCrorie his chance & we need to sign another young keeper to challenge him for the jersey. I don’t think he looked great at times yesterday but he’s only 25 and we have to be a bit more patient. All GK’s make mistakes.2 points

That's very true and is at the heart of the dilemma. What's our budget for a keeper, £2 million, £3 million, £4 million? What kind of keeper will that buy us? It's certainly not going to get us a Stefan Kloss equivalent today or an Allan McGregor in his prime. Jack Butland, who we're continuously linked with, is the 3rd choice Crystal Palace keeper. He's had an ok career, but he's a Championship level keeper with an iffy injury record. At 30 he's a good age for a goalie, but he will make occasional mistakes, he has done his whole career, and he'll be worth nothing at the end of his contract. He might not incur a transfer fee, but his signing on fee and wages will be substantial. Is that a good investment when we could have a great keeper at the club who just needs a run of games? It's a gamble, I accept that, but then so is signing a new keeper too. McCrorie isn't a teenager, he's 25, he's coming into his prime as a player. But he needs games, he needs first team football. The difficult reality is we're not able to compete like for like with Celtic currently. They have bigger budgets and will continue to have for at least another 12 months. We need to develop players, we somehow need to figure out how to do that while winning. It's a conundrum, but it's essential to the long term health of the club. I'd be nervous if we were deciding to replace Morelos with Robbie Ure, or Kent with Josh McPake, but McCrorie feels like a gamble where the odds a bit more in our favour.2 points

As someone who played keeper with not a lot of height, I always tried to get my fingers to a corner or cross. My reasoning was that a striker/airforce couldn't get their head to the ball, and we could fight for the second ball. I preferred McCrorie having a couple of flappers that were cleared, rather than a McGregor stuck to his line. I am not sure if McCrorie is good enough for our first keeper, but I prefer a keeper that comes for a ball.1 point

I think it’s telling how long it has been since there has been serious interest in them though. August 2020 were the last good bids for Morelos and Kent, and the only ones that we know of I think. No bids as they entered their final 12 months is very telling. I'm sure we wouldn't haven't been that hard to deal with.1 point

We need a strong squad not just a desired optimum starting XI. Lawrence may not always start in that set up but he has shown he can make a huge contribution.1 point
-
I think it already has. He's not worth 5m when we have other more pressing needs in the rebuild job1 point
-
That clearly isnt the case though - the French mob admitted they had made a bid for Morelos. Had we accepted he would have gone. Wasnt them that pulled the plug on it, it was us.1 point

A replacement for Tom Lawrence ? hopefully not & Lawrence returns. He’d have been our best player last season had he not got injured in my opinion1 point

Kent and Morelos will make their way. Sad to see Arfield go, best of luck to him!1 point

As money is tight, we need to spend it wisely. What we spend it on depends on our priorities. If the priority is to win the league, the money would be spent on those who will score goals. As we regularly have possession in excess of 70%, if we take more of our chances, the defence will help protect any keeper. If Europe is high on our priorities, perhaps a commanding keeper is required. I know we want both but we may need to choose.1 point

I was at Incirlik during the 2016 coup. Talk about persona non grata! Turks cut off every damned thing, all shipments, including power. July in Turkey is one hot mofo. We kept pumpin them rounds down range though Get it up yees!1 point

He wears his heart on his sleeve. What an incredible person he is.1 point

If it's a floated ball, he should be catching; if it's a whipped ball, he should be punching.1 point
-
Just put him through some punching drills over the summer. I much prefer him to come. At least we have a chance, then. Like I said on the match thread, I thought McCrorie learned: He tried to catch the first couple of corners, which is difficult and he couldn't catch them, and then he started to flap at them, which is better than failing to catch it. Get him punching.1 point
